Match Preview: Arsenal v. Manchester City
Arsenal vs. Manchester City, Saturday, April 24th, Emirates Stadium
In the middle of last September, Arsenal took a second successive trip to Manchester after coming out of the gate like a house on fire. A more or less unfair defeat at Old Trafford had slowed their momentum, and a trip to Eastlands offered the chance to get back to winning. A freakish early goal by Micah Richards, off of Almunia's head and in, was cancelled out by Robin van Persie's 62nd minute finish, and Arsenal began to dominate until Bellamy, Adebayor, and Shaun Wright-Phillips put things away.
Of course, the match was also the first time Emmanuel Adebayor faced his old teammates. After stamping on van Persie's face and celebrating his goal by sprinting the length of the pitch to gloat in front of the Arsenal away support, he assured that he was off of their wedding invite lists, if he wasn't already.
It was not a good day, basically.
A quick glance at the Guardian chalkboard for the match in September suggests that Arsenal attacked and passed much more incisively than did City on the day. City had very few passes into the box, and most of their play went up the wings and died on the vine. Arsène Wenger called the concession of the second goal "stupid" and said things unravelled too quickly. Arsenal's passing chart, true to form, thickly covers most of the pitch, including the City box. Whether this pattern repeats itself tomorrow or not remains to be seen, but it may be difficult without Fabregas in the middle and Gallas and Vermaelen starting play from the back.
Alexander Dimitri Song Billong faces a fitness test today to see if he will be able to go, and van Persie should be able to feature in some capacity. One is loathe to speculate on his psychological state going into the match, but perhaps he will take some motivation from his encounter with Adebayor last summer. I doubt that Wenger will toy with the formation and starting XI too much, particularly if Song is fit. Arshavin, Denilson, and Almunia are out, so Fabianski should feature in, well, hopefully a role where he keeps the ball from rolling across the goal line. Depending on how this match turns out, Wenger may decide to bring in some younger players for the last two matches, but because City are desperate to grab fourth place, and Arsenal to keep at least third, my guess is that he will put out as much experience as possible.
City will be missing Richards, Joleon Lescott, and possibly Martin Petrov from their core group of starters.
Fox Soccer Channel will show the match starting at 12:30 PM EDT.

IIRC
either the second or third goal came on the counter attack after a corner. And i don’t know about you, but Adebayor, Tevez and Bellamy up against Campbell and Silvestre gives me nightmares.

I’m not too worried about Sol, actually. He’s been one of the bright spots for the past three games, I think.

but Silvestre on the other hand...

…yeah. We’ll see. Having Song back would be a huge help.

It also depends where Song plays
Because with Denilson out, it will either be Song or Eastmond in the midfield. I have a feeling Song will be in the midfield and SIlvestre unfortunately will be at the back. With Flappyhandski

Re: Flappyhandski
Don’t we have any healthy youth team keepers available?
Heck, in an effort to make up to the poor fans who traveled up to Wigan for that atrocious display, Wenger ought to hold some kind of contest or tournament among those fans and let the winner start in goal for us.
Either option is unlikely to be much worse than Flappy.
Mannone?
Either him or James Shea, who was in the FA Youth Cup team last year. Sczesny or whatever his bloody name is is on loan to Brentford

I think Mannone is the heir apparent
and I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to have a goalkeeper with a name straight out of the Mafia.
Szczesny is the dogs bollocks
He pretty single handedly saved Brentford from getting relegated. I’ve seen interviews with their fans and they say he’s the best they’ve ever seen. Very impressive for a guy who only just turned 20.Wenger seems very high on him as well, calling him our future #1 here This would be a perfect opportunity for him if he weren’t loaned out.
I was assuming that Song would play in his customary midfield role, which I think would help out Silvestre and Campbell a lot. He’s really made it his own, and his presence was missing vs. Wigan on the first and third goals.
yeah, we've missed Song
it was him who kept Messi quiet in the first leg, and we missed him against Barca, Spurs and Wigan. One thing AW must do in the transfer window is get another Song type player

it's a bummer
we couldn’t keep ahold of Flamini, who did a really tremendous job in that role the last time we sustained a title challenge into April or so…(07-08).
Well Flamini made up his mind to leave and look where that got him, the Milan bench
He could have been a first 11 guy for us for years the way he played in 07/08. I hope that pay increase was worth it.
Oh, definitely
it was a bummer for both parties. He was a great player for us, and (like many who have left us) he has not found greener pastures. See also, Petit, Anelka (for years, anyway), Edu (poor guy, terrible shame about his injuries—he was definitely a fav), Hleb, etc
On Friday Night Live over on Arsenal TV Online right now, Matt Barlow from the Daily Mail said that he asked Jens Lehmann (when he left two years ago) what he felt about the state of English goalkeeping. He said that Jens said that it was in a perilous state, but that he said one name: Joe Hart. Interesting.
Not that we should read anything into this; if there’s one thing we know about Wenger, it’s that he will almost never indicate what his plans are, rendering speculation more or less pointless.
Please win tomorrow
from a Villa fan.

I hope Sol just puts him in his pocket.

I'm guessing he will be relatively quiet
watching people die violently right in front of you tends to put a few things in perspective and I would be surprised if he decided to wind up the home crowd.
Good Luck Arsenal Fans
Hi Everyone,
This is a big match for Arsenal.
Fulham played Man City last month at Craven Cottage. Bellamy and Tevez were huge in that match. They need to be contained.
I am hoping van Persie plays for you today.
Good Luck
