Chamakh - A depth player on Arsenal
Just thought I'd throw up a quick comparison of Arsenal's new 6'1", 154 lb (yes, you read that correctly) striker from Bordeaux. I was curious to see how he compared to Arsenal's other offensive players.
Is he the saviour? You tell me.
It looks like his primary use could be as depth behind RVP and Bendtner, but I'm still looking forward to phrases like "Laying the Chamakh down" or chants of "Chamakh my b!tch up".
By the way, if you're wondering what SOAR is -just take a look at my explanation here.

"savior" implies that Arsenal need saving, which I disagree with
Arsenal are a solid team, and I’m looking forward to Chamakh’s contribution, but it’s not like Arsenal are wallowing in the depths of the Premiership, looking for one bright light in the wilderness.
Completely agree
I guess that didn’t come across right. Arsenal are a fantastic team and frankly my favorite team in the EPL. That said, I’ve read a lot of articles about how Chamakh will transform Arsenal’s finishing, especially through the air.
At 154 lbs, I’m just not sure he has the bulk and strength to compete with the Premierships best in the air. That said, he provides an interesting tactical difference from RVP and may allow Wenger the ability to play a 4-2-3-1 at times.
With RVP’s frequent injuries, having Chamakh can provide depth, which is probably what Arsenal need more than anything, so they don’t have to force Arshavin out of position.
Thanks for the read and the comment.

Sabermetrics for soccer?
I can get behind that. I presume, though, that there are differences between Ligue 1 and the EPL. If there’s a way to correct for that like there is in many baseball sabermetric statistics, it would make SOAR more useful.
On this particular piece: It’s interesting to see the degree to which Chamakh appears to be superior to Arshavin. I don’t know if that’s a function of his skill or of what I was talking about above, but either way it’s interesting to me. I’m curious to see whether or not that’ll play out over a full season.

sorry for the late response
There should definitely be a way to correct for leagues, but I’ll have to wait until I’ve collected more info before I can do that.
When you look at the underlying metrics, the main difference between Chamakh and Arshavin (other than positioning) was the amount of fouls that Chamakh drew. If those fouls are in the offensive zone, they usually result in a SOG or at least a ball in the box, which is dangerous. Arshavin doesn’t draw that type of attention.
I could see a big discrepency in fouls per minute between different leagues, but haven’t found any data showing it yet.
The other thing that shocked me about Arshavin was his lack of assists. It’s pitiful for a player with his vision and creativity.

He was out of sorts this year
and also out of position for a lot of it. I don’t think playing CF in a 4-3-3 was part of his plans, and I think it had a negative effect on his play. It is a little surprising, though.
I completely agree. Arshavin is definitely not a CF. That’s exactly why Wenger brought in Chamakh. Between RVP, Bendtner and Chamakh he has a variety of options and enough depth to keep Arshavin, Walcott, etc out on the wings.

i remember that spell when both RVP and Bendtner was out,
Wenger put Arshavin at CF. It was high comedy watching His Shortness trying to win air balls…
