Arsenal vs. Bolton Wanderers: Carling Cup match preview

Arsenal vs. Bolton Wanderers
Carling Cup Fourth Round, Emirates Stadium
Kickoff: 2:45 PM EDT
TV: Nope. Sorry.
Form: Arsenal WLWWW | Bolton WLLWL
SBN Bolton Perspective: Lion of Vienna Suite

Arsenal welcome Bolton to the Emirates tomorrow in a Carling Cup fourth round match. Having only two days between matches suggests that there will be many, many changes to the Arsenal side. Bolton will probably come in playing a fairly strong side (the aforementioned Lion of Vienna Suite thinks it might be a 4-5-1 featuring the out-of-fashion Tuncay - check out their preview for more insights), but Arsenal, two days removed from a tough Stoke match, will probably make a large number of changes.

Star-divide

Arsène Wenger is no stranger to making wholesale changes. Normal Carling Cup players were probably always going to feature in this match: Lukasz Fabianski, Yossi Benayoun, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Francis Coquelin, and Emmanuel Frimpong all seem likely candidates. Coquelin could even feature at right back given Arsenal's current lack of depth there. Ignasi Miquel seems like a possibility to start at center half, andThomas Vermaelen is back in training.

And there is always Sebastien Squillaci! Yay!

Reserve/youth player Nicholas Yennaris also shows up in many of the training photos on the official site from today. We know that Vermaelen can play left back, and we know that Djourou can play right back, although he might be worn out from yesterday. Frimpong and Coquelin could play in midfield together, but it seems more likely that Coquelin would slot in at right back, leaving Frimpong to partner with Rosicky and Oxlade-Chamberlain in the middle. Benayoun will probably get the start on the left of the front three, and tomorrow seems like the time to roll out Park Ju Young and see what we have in him. The really sadistic part of me hopes that Marouane Chamakh starts again, and again, and again, until he shakes loose this malaise/ennui/rust that has him in irons at the moment, but who knows. I'd quite like to see Ryo Miyaichi start on the left with Park in the middle and Benayoun as a veteran presence on the right, and Chamakh can come off the bench for a change of look if need be.

Given all of the ins and outs involved in the selection for tomorrow, this seems as likely as anything:

Arsenal (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Coquelin, Squllaci, Miquel, Vermaelen; Frimpong, Rosicky; Ryo, Benayoun, Chamberlain; Park.

There is honestly part of me that would not be sad at all to crash out of the cup tomorrow. It would fuel the CLUB IN CRISIS fires, but our squad depth is...not ideal right now. While I think it's important for players like Benayoun, Park, and Coquelin to get playing time, when we're playing our best defender out of his normal position and slotting in a non-right back at right back, it's maybe one cup too many. I could go either way, though.

What do you all think?

We feel Schneider is very much adapting to the English game still

but he is a player of super-quality and has the mentality to succeed. Maybe he has a little knock, but he should be back in two weeks.

There are plenty of guys I want a better look at

Especially Ryo, Park, and Miquel. Which is good since we’ll likely see a lot of them tomorrow.

Whose Park?

I know of no such player

Ryo on one wing, Ox on the other

Vermaelen somewhere. Other than that, I really don’t care, I’d be happy with whatever lineup. But I want to see those three players.

Yennias is likely to play at RB, not Coquelin.

I could care less if we lose tomorrow

We can expect to see a pretty decent Bolton side come out, not one that couldn’t be defeated by Arsenal’s bench, but one that will keep it pretty close. Having the Ox out there is a plus, he could singlehandedly carry the team goal-wise, but the defense will have to be solid. Bottom line though, I could just care less about the Carling Cup, to me, it’s maybe a step up from the Emirates Cup and Johnstone Paint Trophy (a competition we can’t even enter because we’re just too damn good, lol), and the only reason it gets significant attention from the press is because there’s so many teams involved. The only silverware I care about is the league, the Champions League, and the FA Cup, nothing else.

I kinda care about it, but not that much

It would be nice to be able to win it, if we end up in a situation like last year where the other big teams fall out and it doesn’t take too much effort. On the other hand, unlike last year I feel like we’re in a very precarious position in the league, so I certainly don’t want to risk losing out on the Champions League places just for the damned Milk Cup.

I don’t like losing, but if we have to lose I’d rather it happen in a competition nobody gives a crap about.

Either Danago/Banago has gone Full Retard or someone here has anonymously created a satirical account to make these posts.

The former would be funny the latter would be genius. The mystery only adds to the enjoyment.

I feel that we should put the first teamers out there

if a trophy is what it takes to keep RvP or Theo or Jack or anyone else we should put all the eggs into the trophy that is comparatively easiest to win.

Chuck Norris doesn't need a bat.

he just roundhouse kicks the ball out of the park.

by bearcatcardfan on Oct 24, 2011 10:59 PM EDT reply actions

I don't know if the Carling Cup is all that convincing...

Regardless, I still think RVP will stay, but we have to show that we’re at least making an attempt to improve our team. If we go the January transfer window and don’t bring in anyone, that definitely won’t help our chances of retaining RVP and Theo. Jack on the other hand, is all that is loyal to Arsenal, and I don’t see him going anywhere

The only reason I want to see Arsenal win the Carling Cup, which I normally don't care about

is that it will shut the media up about a trophy “drought” that most teams would kill to have. Only six years between trophies? CRISIS

my baseball team hasn’t won since I was born, yours never has, and we complain about six years? In the words of the immortal Ozzie Guillen, “Pssssssh. Please.”

Yeah, I lurked last night

Voted “No” because, much like the 8-2 game, true supporters and followers of the club understand we’ll be fielding an young squad and if we fall out of a competition that is ranked 4th out of 4 by everyone in terms of importance, it won’t ruin our season.

Sure, if we lose we might endure sensational headlines like “VAN PERSIE THREATENS TO LEAVE CLUB AT ONCE FOLLOWING SHOCK DEPARTURE OF CARLING CUP ARSENAL IN CRISIS”, but I won’t lose sleep over it.

Arshavin and Vermaelen are the only two senior squad members in the lineup today

Unless you want to consider Benayoun a senior squad member. By the way, is this game on any sort of TV that you can stream in, because there’s no way I’m making it through a two hour class today
