Manchester City 1 - 0 Arsenal: match report

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 18: David Silva of Manchester City scores the opening goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Manchester City and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on December 18, 2011 in Manchester, England. (Photo by Alex Livesey/Getty Images)

Arsenal defended bravely today at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City, but failed to take their chances. City were enterprising on the counter, and made it count one time, which was enough to win. A late, weak, penalty shout for Arsenal went unheeded, and Joe Hart kept a clean sheet, denying Thomas Vermaelen late. Arsenal fall to sixth place, now 12 points behind City, who solidify their standing at the top of the table.

Star-divide

Arsenal named a lineup with four center backs, while City's featured two former Gunners: Kolo Toure and Samir Nasri. Early on, David Silva tried to free Nasri on the left, but Johan Djourou cleared the danger while the away fans cheered. Arsenal had a little trouble building any sort of passing moves early, but their defenders were alert to City's counter-thrusts in the first five minutes. A Nasri freekick was caught by Wojciech Szczesny in heavy traffic after Mikel Arteta fouled Mario Balotelli.

City's first real chance came when Pablo Zabaleta put in a great early low cross for Sergio Aguero, who controlled but shot just over the bar. City were really bossing the match, Silva testing Szcsesny on 11 minutes. Arsenal hadn't hardly entered City's half. Fifteen minutes in, Arsenal's forwards had hardly touched the ball.

17 minutes in, though, Arsenal started playing. Song played Gervinho through, and the Ivorian's shot caused Joe Hart some problems. The ensuing corner went back to Aaron Ramsey, whose deflected shot caused Hart more problems...the next corner, though, ended up in his arms. Arsenal would try to take a little boost from their first successful foray into City's final third, but only time would tell if they would. City's fullbacks were doing a good job of containing Arsenal along the touchlines, and their press was disrupting most of Arsenal's buildup.

City had a real chance 23 minutes in, Koscielny's headed clearance not making it anywhere. Balotelli took down Micah Richards' cross brilliantly, getting behind Per Mertesacker, but Szczesny produced a great save, smothering the Italian's effort as Arsenal cleared. Arsenal were starting to look a little more composed in their buildup play, and won a free kick from the right on 27 minutes that came to nothing, Robin van Persie floating one in rather than shooting.

City won a corner on 28 minutes that Arsenal did well to contain, but City managed to turn in a good spell of pressure following it, Yaya Toure and Gareth Barry keeping things turning over from the rear of Arsenal's third. Arsenal did manage to escape via Gervinho down the left 32 minutes in, the attack ending when a Ramsey cross to van Persie was headed softly wide.

Arsenal nearly found a breakthrough 35 minutes in, Laurent Koscielny bursting forward and finding van Persie. With options in front of him, he chose to shoot instead, his muffled shot falling into the middle of a Kolo Toure-Aaron Ramsey soup that ended up all over Joe Hart's hands. That makes no sense; just know that Arsenal didn't score.

Gareth Barry earned a yellow card for a hard tackle on Arteta, but Arsenal's free kick did nothing 39 minutes in. Aguero burst around the Arsenal defense a minute later, Thomas Vermaelen trying to cut the angle off, and Szczesny made a good diving save to his right, anticipating the shot well. The last five minutes of the half were approaching; Koscielny earned a yellow for a fine shoestring tackle on running back Aguero. Gervinho neither crossed nor shot as minute 47 approached. Nothing really happened before the halftime whistle, although City had by far more of the first half. Arsenal had chances, but none went in, and 0-0 it was.

Arsenal began the second half pretty well, although Johan Djourou came off for Ignasi Miquel in the early moments, the Spaniard taking up left back, Vermaelen moving to the center and Koscielny to the right. His touch from a Nasri cross gave City a corner, but he defended that well enough, putting Silva off.

The match was pretty even until Balotelli burst away on the left 53 minutes in, and facing Song one-on-one, he cut into the box and lashed a shot that Szczesny could only push into the patch of Aguero, Vermaelen put him off, but his deflected clearance fell into the path of Silva, who buried it and no mistake. 1-0 to City, Arsenal's stout defending finally undone.

Theo Walcott tested Hart immediately, the English keeper pushing the ball over for a corner which came to nothing. Eastlands had come alive, and Arsenal were going to need something more than they had. van Persie put the ball in the back of the net, but was offside, just. City were looking more lively all of a sudden again. In a frantic back and forth few minutes, Aguero nearly made it 2 62 minutes in, flashing a shot just wide of the far post. Nasri flashed a cross low, that nobody got to, just a minute later.

It was all City.

Arsenal, though, were trying, and Gervinho managed to get away on the left, cut back for van Persie, whose first-time shot was tame, Hart claiming. Still, it was something. City won a free kick, which was cleared straight to Zabaleta, who crushed a shot off the post. Arsenal came right down the other end, Walcott's shot/cross headed straight into Hart and out for a goal kick (except RvP was ruled wrongly offside).

69 minutes in, Arsenal's desperation was growing. Wenger removed Walcott for Andrei Arshavin. Vermaelen had a shot from a free kick deflect wide for a corner. Arshavin played a first-time cross poorly, straight to Hart, although the idea was okay. Aguero earned a yellow for a late foul on Vermaelen. 72 minutes in, Balotelli came off for James Milner, as Mancini adjusted things away from attack a little bit. Arteta earned a yellow card for something indiscernable.

Micah Richards may have handled in the box 78 minutes in, but no call came. That is all. No comment.

Aaron Ramsey tried some desperate backheels. No comment.

Marouane Chamakh replaced Per Mertesacker--all the cards were on the table now for Arsenal. City brought on Nigel de Jong for Yaya Toure and Edin Dzeko for Samir Nasri. The game was fizzling out a little bit, mainly because Arshavin was wasteful with his passing. 89 minutes in, Koscielny crossed, Arshavin collected, and shot near post, wide, in a poor effort.

Arsenal earned a free kick, which was slid across to an unmarked Vermaelen, who unleashed from 20 yards, Hart pushing the shot over for a corner, which came to nothing. Four minutes of extra time were on the docket, City looking to put things to rest through Aguero and Dzeko. Dzeko hit the side netting on 92 minutes.

Arsenal were not giving up, though, and Thomas Vermaelen nearly scored from 25 yards with a wicked curler that went just wide. That was the last chance, and Phil Dowd brought things to a close, City leaving 1-0 winners. Arsenal defended bravely, but couldn't make their chances count.

Next up: Villa.

Tough loss

Hart and Szcz played huge. We could’ve won 2-0 with a lot of good luck, or lost by 3 or 4 with a lot of bad luck.

Now we’ve played all of the other top 6 teams through 16 games, and played all of them but Liverpool on the road. We got 5 very win-able games coming up, so…crisis.

The atrocious play by Gervinho and Arshavin is making me wonder if we should just make a massive bid for Hazard or Gotze in January

We need someone on that left wing so we can be dangerous from all angles. Without that help, and with games like today where Walcott can’t get anything going and the midfield passing is just flat out brutal, we’re not going to be able to win, or at least without some sort of miracle. Half of our shots today were long range shots from Vermaelen, a couple of those he could have scored on (but both keepers were in beast mode today), this is something we shouldn’t have to rely on though. Whether it’s January or next summer, we’re going to have to bring in Hazard or Gotze, or anyone of that caliber for the left wing, and we’ll probably have to say a dear good bye to one of our favorites (sorry Arshavin, the tribe has spoken…)

I just can't see it

I can’t see Dortmund selling for anything less than 50 million at this point, he’d fit into any squad in the world.

Yea, I'd say around 40-50 mil. if he goes this winter

But he’s cup tied currently, and I’m guessing Dortmund is going to want to hold out until the summer when they could get a massive bidding war going…

There's about zero chance he goes this winter unless it's obscene money

Dortmund are out of the CL, but they are still very much in it domestically. They are also one of the most profitable clubs in all of Europe, cash flow is not even a remote problem for them.

I give Gervinho a little bit of slack

Because for one, it’s his first season in the EPL, which is a lot more difficult and has a faster pace than Ligue 1, it may take him a season to get accustomed to this kind of play. He has that tendency on a counter to slow waaaaaay down or just come to a complete halt when really he should be keeping his eyes up for someone to pass the ball off to. He also isn’t sending in any crosses like Walcott is, you can tell that he isn’t transitioning into a traditional winger role like Walcott has this year. The one thing I like about Gervinho aside from his pace is his ability to switch sides of the pitch with Walcott, something that Arshavin just… can’t.

He slowed down the counter a lot of times today

but hopefully he’ll learn not to. He offers a lot getting to the byline. I’m willing to be patient with him.

by Ted Harwood on Dec 18, 2011 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

The thing with Gervinho

Is really we don’t need his crosses.
Let’s think about the goals he’s created.
Against Udinese: Cutback from the byline
Against Stoke: Cutback(s) from the byline
Against Chelsea: Square ball after great diagonal run
Against Sunderland: Driving into middle, pass for RvP

All of these goals are goals we wouldn’t have scored last year. Gervinho gives us a completely different option, and created the only chance inside Arsenal’s own penalty area. If you’re going to blame someone for the lack of creativity today, blame Ramsey, who just wasn’t penetrative enough (think about what Cesc would’ve done today).

He slowed down the counter today because he lacked support from fullback. If it’s 1 v 1, most defenders can use their body like Richards or Toure did, and block him off. 2 v 1 situations are completely different, because if a defender challenges, it leaves the second player open. Thus, Gervinho gets that extra yard of space.

Good point regarding the constraints of CBs at fullback. The lack of overlapping width limits the attack for sure.

Stevan Jovetic please.

I wanted him last year but he was hurt. He’s been spectacular in Italy this season. (Currently tied for goals with Cavani) top player and he can play left wing and up top. Better striking option for a back up at least than Chamakh and Park.

Frustrating loss

And quite chaotic at times, but damn that was still a fun game to watch.

Was looking forward to (and fearing) this matchup for quite a while, and I confess I was pleased they could have stolen a draw or even a win.

Cheers to both goalkeepers. Hot damn they were on.

City had more quality. I think it was a fair result

But can’t call myself a supporter if I don’t complain about a few things…

Why does Arsene always send Mert up for set pieces? I’ve been watching all season and I really don’t recall him ever getting his head on a delivery. Heck, he even rarely wins headers in our own box. He must be a decoy!! Clever move.

OK I’m going to say something very unpopular but I can’t hold back anymore. Ramsey is frustrating to watch!! I certainly hope he will become a great player. But as of now his occasional great vision doesn’t make up for his often over-cuteness. Too many back heel flicks that go no where. And he has very heavy “second-touch”. By that I mean he tries to beat defender off dribble but lacks the pace so all too often knocks the ball away from his feet when he starts to accelerate. His not playing to his strength. Although he’s not fast, he has good close control when he doesn’t have to run at speed. When ball is played to him, I want to see him just take 1-2 nimble touches to create enough separation then deliver a good ball, be it a through ball or a cross. He’s brilliant when he does that, but not often enough.

OK that’s it for now. Let’s win the next one Arsenal!!

by themiracle18 on Dec 19, 2011 5:14 AM EST reply actions

Well...

Mert moves up on close set pieces because naturally, Mert is tall… that’s just a given then that he’s up there regardless of how long it takes his lanky body to run back to position. His aerial prowness isn’t that great honestly imo, but because he’s like six foot infinity he has better odds of connecting on a ball. He did almost knock in the equalizer on our implosion at Blackburn earlier this year though…

I wish Mert got on more headers and think he could benefit from some weight-training

If you’ve got a choice between Verm, Mert, Kos, and Djourou, Verm is probably the best in the air, and after that, then they’re all about equal. However, I’d much, much rather have Kos and probably Djourou stay back to defend potential counter attacks

Verm is all that is man

Seriously, why are we even shopping for another striker? Just run Verm up there and let him take a rifle from like 30 out, he’ll put it on target, lol

I know Mert is tall

And you are right Arsent must think even if he just stands there, the in-swinging ball is going to hit his head one of these times…

But still, just talk of frustration from a support hoping he could do more with his advantage…
