Arsène Wenger rules out center back purchase in January
Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has ruled out any transfers at the center back position during the January window, he said during his press conference today:
"I have had no contact [with Bolton about Cahill]," Wenger said.
"We have plenty of centre backs, fortunately they can play on the flanks too as they are at the moment. We are not looking for any centre backs. No chance."
It's perhaps a little surprising that people are still asking about purchases for the center of defense, as so far this year, just about anyone paired with Thomas Vermaelen in the center (particularly Laurent Koscielny) has looked solid. With those two, Per Mertesacker, and Johan Djourou back there, Arsenal have a good mixture of talent and experience, and despite individual weaknesses (except for Vermaelen, of course, who knows no weakness or defect), the unit as a whole has come together well.
Full back, of course, is a little thin at the moment. Wenger only wants a short-term solution there, if any (after the jump):
"I have to see what is available - if I have a good opportunity then why not? But I haven’t made any enquiry yet, so for the moment no Wayne Bridge or anyone else.
"It is of course something we look at but as well it depends on how long you have to take them," added Wenger.
"They have a big impact on your wages as well. If you have to sign a player for three or four years and then you have three or four left backs, only one can play, so they are not happy.
"It can only be a short-term solution for us because we have bought Santos, we have Gibbs, we have Vermaelen who can play there, so we do not need a long-term solution."
At this point, I worry that Gibbs is the new Diaby, but what do I know? I'd rather have a short-term left back to spell Santos at this point.
At any rate, at this point, Arsenal's needs are perhaps more pressing in attack. A midfielder who can play behind the striker to spell Aaron Ramsey might be good, as long as Jack Wilshere is still out. Park is a little untested as of yet as a backup for van Persie, but he will have to fill in at some point. Yossi Benayoun looks lively whenever he comes on, and obviously he made a difference on Wednesday. Tomas Rosicky and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also potential choices, but if Arsenal need depth anywhere besides fullback, it's in the attacking portions of the midfield.

I was listening to a discussion about the current standings and how Chelsea's toying with 5th place.
The guy asked incredulously, “Can you imagine a Champions League without Chelsea?” Apparently cause that’s harder than imagining one with out Arsenal?!?! When was the last time we missed it?
Captain, there are doubt''s...
The 90's, back when only one or two teams got in
Can’t say Chelsea been able to do that

It wasn't a comment about competitiveness. It was a comment about the media.
That’s also what our whole “IN CRISIS” meme is about.

Arsenal have been in the Champions League, consistently, longer than Chelsea
So, uh, yeah, it’s harder to see Arsenal not in it.

we don't need any more center backs, sheesh....
I believe if there is a reasonable deal for a left back/left winger we should pounce on it rather than just look for a loan spell. Gibbs might as well not be in our lineup, he has consistently zero durability.
As far as attacking mid to spell Ramsey, it frustrates me to no end that Wenger doesn’t give Arshavin a shot there. We’ve been playing the man out of position ever since we bought him…let’s see what he can do if we give him consistent minutes in the area he’s best at.

Spot-on
Granted it wasn’t a league game and it was against a weaker side, but Arshavin’s best game this season was when he played through the middle and made Park look like the signing of the season.
"I know you're from Middle America, and sometimes you feel like you're representing more than just a school or a conference, maybe an entire group of American citizens out there."

That was against Bolton, no?
I know Bolton are awful, but they are (ostensibly) a Premier League team, and I think they mostly played their first team against us. So I would say that you’re right to say that’s relevant evidence in the trial of “Arshavin v. Playing in the middle”

I did that with Armand Traore so I don't want to hear about it.
No upgrade needed
Chuck Norris doesn't need a bat.
he just roundhouse kicks the ball out of the park.

Gervinho
How long will Gervinho be gone on African duty? I don’t know how comfortable I am with AOC or Arsharvin filling in there for any substantial period of time.
early-January to mid-Feb, I do believe
Tournament runs until Feb 12. Of course if Ivory Coast go out early he will be back sooner.
I would guess IC do not go out early
one of the strongest teams in Africa

Cup of Nations is a bit unpredictable
It’s really common for upsets to happen, so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the big names were knocked out.
Park Could also fill in there
Wenger did that a few times in meaningless games this season
Well
Well even adding Park to that list, any of those give you confidence to do much of anything? The only game that is going to be super tough is United in January. The others are all winnable I just don’t want to keep dropping points in games against the Fulham’s of the world.
Word on the street is
Chelsea are signing Gary Cahill. Like for REAL!
Running Transfer SAGA ending.

But this is good too.
Plenty of hate left for Chelsea. They also need to get out of the way.
by Sabrina Dessipe on Dec 23, 2011 9:50 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, but (horrifyingly) I'm pretty sure Spurs are better than Chelsea this year
and if I can pick only one, I’d rather finish above Spurs than Chelsea. Besides, Chelsea already has a vastly overrated English centerback that we can cut to pieces, giving them another one would almost be unfair.

Arsenal will finish 3rd.
I am confident of that.
It will go nicely with our upset of Barca in the Champs league finals.
