Leeds United and Arsenal - A History

Arsenal have, as we all know by now, drawn Leeds United in the third round of my favorite competition, the FA Cup. More recent Arsenal fans might not know this, but Leeds United are the embodiment of all that is ugly and wrong with soccer and parents should steer their kids away from being Leeds fans just like they steer their kids away from talking to balding old men who lurk at the edge of the playground in a windowless white van. Why? I'm glad you asked!

Star-divide

Leeds United first took part in England's top flight in 1920. They mostly just Leedsed their way through the seasons until 1961, when Don Revie was named manager of the first team. Revie took an underachieving Leeds team and basically turned them into late 90's/early 00's Arsenal - he ended up always producing a top four finish, and added a couple league titles, a few FA Cups, and assorted other pieces of hardware for good measure.

One of Revie's other "innovations", though, was the creation/propagation of the "Dirty Leeds" style of play. He called it "playing for results", but more often than not it was a physical, ugly style of play that crossed the line from aggressive to dirty more often than not. They largely got away with it, because they were a really good team in the mid-to-late 70's, but they did not win a lot of friends with the way they played.

After Revie left Leeds to go manage the England national team, Leeds actually made it to a European Cup final in 1974-75, but they started to decline as subsequent managers weren't able to recruit or retain players of the same quality that Revie was able to attract, and were relegated to the Second Division in 1982.

Leeds spent the rest of the 1980's in the Second, gaining promotion back to the First in 1989-1990. Up until the late 1990's, though, Leeds didn't amount to much, and it was only after George Graham was named manager shortly after the start of the 1996 season that Leeds started to play well again.

Graham left after two years to go manage some pub team in North London, and the reins at Leeds were taken up by one David O'Leary in 1998. O'Leary was Graham's assistant, so he had a reasonably long history at Leeds, and during O'Leary's tenure, Leeds fully reclaimed the "Dirty Leeds" moniker of the Revie years. In 2000, O'Leary's Leeds kicked, punched, elbowed, and hacked their way to a UEFA Cup semi-final, which they lost to Galatasaray, who won the tournament by beating Arsenal 4-1 on penalties.

In the Premier League, too, Leeds were constantly burnishing their dirty reputation. I had the lack of pleasure of seeing them play at Highbury twice during O'Leary's reign as manager; both times O'Leary's team - particularly Alan Smith, Lee Bowyer, and Jonathan Woodgate - beat the shit out of Arsenal from kickoff to the final whistle, while Arsenal legend O'Leary stood there on the Highbury sidelines and watched his reputation disintegrate in front of the fans that had idolized him for years.

(Before this goes further, I have to say that I generally have no problem with physical play, as long as it's done fairly. Manchester United, during this same mid-to-late 1990's era, played an incredibly physical style of play - but they also had prodigious levels of talent to back it up, and didn't use their physicality as a primary weapon. They stayed on the right side of the "hard v. dirty" divide (with the exception of the occasional Roy Keane), and it was amazingly effective.)

This era also coincided with the first dumping of swaths of cash into the trough of money that has ruined modern soccer - big cable TV deals were just starting to be signed in England, and clubs were starting to realize that they could, in fact, charge more or less whatever they wanted for admission and for replica shirts and other "team branded" things, and club owners, like the pigs in Animal Farm, got drunk on money and power.

Peter Ridsdale, owner of Leeds during this period, decided that not only did he like money, but he liked success too, so on the back of the aforementioned UEFA Cup campaign, Ridsdale rolled the dice big time and spent like crazy on such expensive players as Rio Ferdinand (a club record £18 million), Robbie Fowler, and Olivier Dacourt, using money that he borrowed against future TV revenues and sponsorship money (great idea, Pete!) on the assumption that Leeds would be a regular participant in the Champions League. The only flaw in this otherwise genius plan is that Leeds then failed to make the Champions League in the years following the signings, leaving Leeds with massive wage bills and almost zero money to repay them. Whoopsadoodle!

Ridsdale then was forced to sell players to make his loan payments. David O'Leary had finally had enough when Ferdinand was sold for £30 million, and was fired after fighting publicly with Ridsdale over the sale. Terry Venables was then brought in, and the fire sale continued, and finally after the 2004 season Leeds were relegated as their finances became unfixable. They have been in the lower leagues since, but this year are in the Championship with a chance to get back to the Premiership next season - a chance I hope they screw up.

I don't hate much, in sports or in real life. Hate is a wasted emotion that ends up doing nothing good for anybody involved. There are, however, a few teams that I wish zero success for - and Leeds is absolutely one of those teams. They personify everything to me that is wrong with the game - ugly play, a massive financial overreach, and the arrogance to believe that both of those things were and are acceptable. They may be running their club in a more fiscally responsible way now - I don't pay attention to them these days and thus have no idea - but the fact that they borrowed so heavily against a future that provided no guarantees, all the while playing a style of the game that would make your average prison basketball team blush, means that in my opinion, Leeds got and are getting what they deserve - lower division soccer.

While I agree

I would like to say that I successfully transformed Leeds into a 4-2-3-1 possession-based side who won the Premier League AND the fair play table in Football Manager 09. So, in other words, I’m a miracle worker.

If I owned a video game console

I would buy a soccer game and spend a lot of time ensuring that both Leeds and Spurs end up in the Conference.

Why do you bother?

I’m a Leeds fan for 40+ plus years so obviously a fair target for your hate, just for existing seemingly.

really what is the point of heading an article “Leeds United and Arsenal – A History” when you can’t be bothered to do a little more than skim read Wikipedia? I don’t know how old you are, but unless its under 16 or over 80 then shame on you. Are you that Arsenal fan that John Thompson used to mimic in the Fast Show?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c29OpzjjXc0

“Leeds spent the rest of the 1980’s in the Second, gaining promotion back to the First in 1989-1990. Up until the late 1990’s, though, Leeds didn’t amount to much”

apart from winning the last First Division Championship in 1991-92?

“because they were a really good team in the mid-to-late 70’s”

Late 60’s to mid 70’s more like As well as the League in 1969 we won the League Cup in 1968 and FA Cup in 72. Do you know who we beat in those two matches, do you even now the history of your team?

The tag Dirty Leeds may well have been deserved at times, but anyone who watched football in the 60’s & 70’s might agree that most teams were dirty and where Leeds exceeded the others was in the clinical way they played. To name but 2 Eddie Gray and John Giles were brilliant players of the ball and for much of the early 70’s our team was made up of 11 internationals.

As the the O’leary Team kicking and punching its way to the sf of the UEFA cup, first I heard That team of youngster was generally considered to be skillful and played without fear. You might also have mentioned that 2 of our supporters were murdered by Galatasary fans, just out of respect maybe?

It’s not my fault that Ridsdale screwed us so efficiently that Bloody ken bloody Bates seems a half decent option, or that some Leeds players of the past have been overly physical. I love my team and have done for 40 years and look forward to having a right old go in the 3rd round. I’ll be there and I’ll wave at you if you are going?

I'm 42 and have been watching English soccer since about 1990

And since this is an Arsenal blog, I feel no need to be all about Leeds. I didn’t mention the two supporters that were killed in Turkey, because that fact was not germane to the point I was making.

I have no problem with people loving Leeds. I do not. I am also not a historian, of Leeds or otherwise. I was just trying to provide some context for why I and several other people who post here don’t like Leeds. Judging by your reaction I think I did a pretty reasonable job.

Welcome to the Internet?

I keep re-reading the opening, chuckling at:

Leeds United are the embodiment of all that is ugly and wrong with soccer and parents should steer their kids away from being Leeds fans just like they steer their kids away from talking to balding old men who lurk at the edge of the playground in a windowless white van.
…and then I get to the comments and wonder how anyone — be he tortured Leeds fan or innocent bystander without suspicious choice of affinity for a group of men kicking a ball around in particular color of shirt — would read that lovely passage and expect an exhaustive history praising Leeds’ accomplishments to follow.

Really now, it’s sports. “Why bother,” you ask? Because it’s just sports. And humor. Maybe be happy that a whole generation of fans who have nobly lived lives oblivious to Leeds for the last decade just might have to re-learn the foul history of your foul team and the foul little things they’ve done to get to all the foul places they’ve been. (FYI: That was just jovial hyperbole. In sincerity, nobody deserves the Ridsdale experience … not even Leeds fans.)

Didn't realise this blog was for Gooners only.

And since this is an Arsenal blog, I feel no need to be all about Leeds.

So you feel no need to get the facts right about us winning the championship in 92 – fair enough if that is what you think, its your blog.

But not mentioning we played you in the 72 FA Cup final or the 68 League cup final? Surely that might be relevant to an article on History of our 2 clubs.

I didn’t realise you were from th US and I realise its all before your time a a few thousand miles away, but if that is the case then be honest and only write about things you know something about.

And no, this blog isn’t for Arsenal fans only – but it is primarily intended for and read by Arsenal fans, and all content here is written with that bias in mind. To expect anything else is a bit short-sighted.

The article wasn’t meant as an exhaustive history of Leeds, or of Arsenal for that matter (I not only didn’t mention the cups you refer to, but the league championships and other cups Arsenal have won since the mid-1970s either). If you want to write a more in-depth, nuanced history of your lifelong favorite club, there are many places to do so that are not Arsenal-centric blogs. I fully admit I am no expert on the history of Leeds United, but that wasn’t what i was going for – it was meant to be an illustrative sketch of why many Arsenal fans don’t like Leeds. I had no interest in writing an exhaustive history of Leeds, and for the purposes of this article, did not feel the need to.

I am not a reporter, not a historian, and not trying to be – I am an Arsenal fan, trying to articulate why I don’t like Leeds United.

It's not fair for you to criticize us for being American

No, we don’t live in England, and can’t walk up to the local stadium and watch a match. No, we can’t really experience the club in all it’s history. However, despite having these limitations, we do in fact watch football thousands of miles away. We do follow clubs, and cheer our team on. But do you have to pay extra just for the chance of having your club come on tv more than a handful of times?Do you have to get up early in the morning to watch your team’s league matches? Do you search dozens of websites, looking for a free feed? Do you live in a place where few of your friends share more than a cursory interest in the sport, never mind the league or the club? Do you live somewhere where literally no major source of news care about football?

by Adnan Ilyas on Dec 5, 2011 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

I demand you say something nice about my team, dammit!

Dissenting opinions will not be tolerated!

Grow up. Oh wait.

You disagree, bully for you. You can spout all the Good Leeds News you want and I doubt you’ll alter the opinions of someone who doesn’t like Leeds. Or are you going to come out and profess your undying respect for Manchester United? Some fans dislike other teams, it is just a part of the environment. If you can’t handle it… see, I can’t even say that because football/soccer fans are generally far more thick skinned – especially the old farts who’ve been in it a while.

And hey, what do I know? I’m just a 30 year old Canadian, right? (I’m also a PhD candidate which obvious means my 26 years of school mean I’m the smartest one here. I love logic, don’t you?)

Okay, there's a lot to unpack here

There is no such thingas SOCCER in the UK it is football !</>

That may be. Counterpoints:

1. The English also coined the term “soccer” and used it from 1863 until 1881.
2. I am an American, living in the US.
3. Nobody in this country is really pedantic enough to care what it’s called. It’s still a fantastic game.

Maybe you should pay them a visit and learn about the history of football.

Maybe you should pay the OED a visit and learn about the history of the word “soccer”.

And apparently you didn’t read to the end of my piece, where I said

I don’t hate much, in sports or in real life. Hate is a wasted emotion that ends up doing nothing good for anybody involved.

I don’t hate Leeds. I don’t wish them any sort of success, but I don’t hate them.

I was attracted to your article “a history” as I remember Leeds and Arsenal playing many finals and maybe FA Cup ties, over many years , including ties that went on and on, replay after replay. As far as I know there has never been any bad blood between Arsenal and Leeds, so I was shocked to read your opening paragraph. Very ill judged, but you have the right to hold this view.

by mralchemy on Dec 5, 2011 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

There are many, many Arsenal fans who dislike Leeds and have done for years

It mostly stems from David O’Leary’s time at the helm and how he continued and expanded the aggressive/ugly style of play Leeds has been famous for throughout the years. I have many friends in London (friends I have met in person and gone to games with and hung out with, not just Internet friends), most of which who have been Arsenal season ticket holders since the 70’s, who share this view.

you have the right to hold this view.

It is awfully kind of you to allow me to have an opinion.

survey

Im glad you have undertaken a scientific study “there are many, many arsenal fans who dislike leeds”
Do you dislike Leeds Yes or NO?

Mentioning a cliched "agressive ugly style " is very lazy statement, a bit like me saying “boring boring Arsenal”

I thought Arsenal’s rivalries were with Spurs, Fulham, West Ham? and other London based teams?

When Leeds won the FA Cup beating Arsenal , I remember the Arsenal Fans applauding the Leeds team for the lap of honour at the end of the match- rent the DVD

I also dont remember any problems in the last two games between the clubs, I dont remember any commentator saying Leeds were ugly or aggressive? I dont know where you havegot this from.

I dislike Leeds. Yes.

and I never claimed to be a scientist, a sociologist, an anthropologies, or anything else. I was drawing from my own personal experiences, at Arsenal games with long-time Arsenal supporting friends and watching Arsenal v. Leeds games on TV when I can/could.

Mentioning a cliched "agressive ugly style " is very lazy statement, a bit like me saying "boring boring Arsenal"

There was a time when “Boring Boring Arsenal” was true. There was a time when referring to Leeds’ “aggressive ugly style” was true. Are those times these times? Maybe, or maybe not, depending on your particular slant. It’s almost like I’m a fan of one team and not the other.

I also dont remember any problems in the last two games between the clubs,

There is a statistical concept you may want to familiarize yourself with called “”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sample_size_determination" target="new">small sample size". I drew my observation from years of matches, some of which I saw in person with my own eyes and some of which I read about. Is it scientific? Nope, not even close, never intended it to be. But it’s definitely more than two games’ worth of recent memory.

I dont remember any red cards?

Red cards are not the only sign of overly physical play. For every red card you can show me, I can show you 10 incidents that went uncarded that should have been red carded (not just in Leeds games, but in soccer in general).

I’m sure there are many Arsenal fans who like Leeds, or at the very least ignore them. There are also many who actively dislike them. I am one of those fans. That’s how sports works – why is it a surprise to you that an Arsenal fan would write a piece that is less than complimentary about your favorite team on an Arsenal-centric website?

ignorant insensitive lazy blogger

Just like to congratulate you on one of the most vitriolic and unfounded/unfair and poorly educated articles about leeds united ive ever read …and as a leeds fan i have read a few!

Also you call yourself a football fan ? you choose to write an article about how leeds united disgusts you so much 2 days after Leeds United , the club , the players & the fans showed the whole world how to cherish and say goodbye to one of english footballs greatest servants ??

SHAME ON YOU!!! …..R.I.P GARY SPEED (FORMER LEEDS , EVERTON, NEWCASTLE , BOLTON , SHEFF UTD AND WALES LEGEND).

Everybody hates us and we dont care !!! If we are so insignificant to you , why write such an article ?

Can you tell me why you have the diluded opinion that O’learys team punched kicked and elbowed their way all the way to a EUFA cup Semi final ??
I seem to remember how all the commentators where telling everyone at the time that leeds united where everybody new second favourite team …due to the fact that they were young and played exiting attacking vibrant football , we got all the way to the SEMI FINAL of the champions league in their 1st season back .

In all the years arsenal have been in the champions league..how many times have you reached the semi finals??

I dont think that leeds team would have got that far on just punching and kicking do you??

Absoloutly disgusted with your lazy and ignorant rant ….it sounds like you have taken your brief time as a football fan , and listened to a few idiot arrogant prawn sandwich arsenal fans , and used them as your wikepedia!!!

It proves , were leeds united as terrible and violent as you say , they wouldnt have gotten to the semi finals of the champions league ! it proves they WERE a good team , we got out of the first group stage which included AC MILAN AND BARCELONA , WE ALSO WERE DRAWN AGAINST REAL MADRID & LAZIO IN THE NEXT GROUP AND WE GOT THROUGH TO THE QUARTER FINAL AGAINST DEPORTIVO AND THEN ONTO THE SEMI AGAINST VALENCIA WHO WE LOST OUT TO IN THE SECOND LEG! all this from a team that in your words

O’Leary’s Leeds kicked, punched, elbowed, and hacked their way to a UEFA Cup semi-final, which they lost to Galatasaray, who won the tournament by beating Arsenal 4-1 on penalties.

Anyway have you got ANYTHING nice to say about your complete lack of respect towards leeds united fans in this very sad time ? not just sad to leeds fans but all football fans , even millwall fans had the decency to behave on saturday out of respect for gary speed and leeds united ?

These Leeds fan have a point that if you are writing an article about Leeds/Arsenal, you should likely include all the history between the two sides and not just pick what you wish. It’s pretty poor to pass it off as history as presented, especially as there will be a lot of people reading with very little prior knowledge of the history between the two sides.

At the same time however, claiming Leeds was not dirty back in the day is foolish by anyone. It would be like an Arsenal fan claiming Eboue never dove while playing for us, or that Vieira’s red cards were not deserved at all, ever. The facts are the facts, regardless of who you support. Don’t be a baby because it’s pointed out.
