Short End of the Stick Much?
Today's ref for the Arsenal-Newcastle match had me all sick inside.
There I was thinking how fantastic the match was after the 1st half, with Theo Walcott and Robin Van Persie bullying the Newcastle defense.
Then Mr. Referee takes some magic mushrooms and rigs the whole match for Newcastle.
Diaby's scuffle, despite warranting a red card, was a good slap in the face for Joey Barton. Speaking of Barton, what a lucky man he is to display disgusting sportsmanship and leave the pitch without a booking.
Anyone else feel cheated today? :\

I feel cheated by Arsenal
We lacked composure and leadership when we needed it. I don’t care if the ref is calling the match like a blind mongoose. Giving up a 4-0 lead with only 22 minutes left is inexfuckingscusable

RIP Boog. FIRE TLR NOW
I think it turned on Diaby's temper tantrum
Barton made a really cheap tackle, but I was really surprised by Diaby’s reaction to it. Arsenal seemed to fall apart right after that.

They were bad calls but at 4-0 up that game has to be won
No blaming the referee for this one, unfortunately. This is all on Arsenal.
surely not *all*, though?
They could’ve played so much better in the second half, but it’s a combination of things, isn’t it? Just as one could say “if Arsenal play better, they win”, one could say “if Phil Down calls the game correctly, Arsenal win”, too, right?
If Arsenal defend as they are capable of doing
refereeing decisions are irrelevant.

I see what you mean
the converse: if referees do their job competently, Arsenal’s defending doesn’t matter, doesn’t really work, because then Arsenal still have a problem, namely, crap defending.
However, Arsenal could, in theory, defend better than anyone in history, and still have a referee decision muck things up for them, too.
God, I’m confused. See what this match has done to me? It’s got me turning every which way.
I would be a lot more confused if it was 1-0 and a bad decision led to a collapse that allowed a goal
but at 4-0 up, blaming the referee is like blaming a single drop of water for causing the flood that ruins your basement.
I think the bad taste comes from the idea that
we can have bad games or bad stretches in a game. Whereas, the referees, yes all 4 of them, can’t. The four of them should be able to get the calls correct.
If they can’t call the game properly, how can you possibly play it?
Captain, there are doubt's...
Element's from the past and the future combining to form something not quite as good as either.
The biggest problem we had is that Jack had to play DM after Diaby went off
a role he’s not used to, and in those circumstances, it was tricky. Cesc didn’t play well, Jack didn’t play well, nobody was holding the ball up…yep.
But the ref only made bad decisions on 2 pens and the free kick
And, if Arsenal had defended better, or extended the lead, they wouldn’t have gotten into positions to get the pens
Squeezed to Song and Bendtner and Song and Nasri oh lovely lovely lovely!
-Peter Drury, the one time his commentating has ever been acceptable.
I still personally think the decisions around the Barton tackle were all wrong
especially given his hard tackle from behind on Arshavin earlier that went unpunished, but yeah. I’m not saying we should have let a four-goal lead slip, I’m just saying that the referee is one possible factor in the outcome of the match out of many, smaller or larger.
There were others.
I’ll probably get too upset watching the YES replay tonight to catalogue them all.

Just because we should have won doesn't mean
Dowd isn’t a twat.

So, there was an interesting moment just before the half.
Barton tackled Andrei to the ground, clean, and then Diaby came in and tackled Barton, late, but not aggressive. As Barton stood to take the free kick, Diaby came over and shook his hand to apologize. About 6 or 7 minutes later, Barton tried to shove his knee through Diaby’s shin (end his career?) That’s class for ya.
Dowd was utterly useless and incompetent from then on; he completely lost control of the match. Every dive and embellishment from Newcastle was accepted at face value, the linesmen made an increasing majority of the calls, the 3rd Newcastle goal was wrongly taken away, both penalties were mind bogglingly weak, it was complete chaos.
Finally, Szczesny made some brilliant saves. We would have lost without him.
