Official Transfer Thread

Since no one has made up a transfer thread yet, I'm going to oblige. It seemed like a popular opinion in pdb's thread.

This thread is for all transfer related rumors, gossip, dreams, hopes, and fears.

I'm not sure if we'll need to make a new thread periodically but I'm sure we can cross that bridge when we get there. I'm hoping this thread will keep the rest of the blog free of any transfer related trash and let Ted and Beltrans keep up with actual Arsenal news and topics.

So to get this thread started, Samir Nasri hasn't yet signed a new contract with the club. Are his(his agent's) demands too high, or is he waiting to see if Cesc leaves or other players come in. He was superb early in the year but tailed off when he picked up niggling injuries.

Other transfer stuff:

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain linked to Arsenal again after we almost signed him in January.

Gervinho, the Lille forward is set to leave his club with us as a possible suitor

Bendtner's father seems to think he's worth £12 million.

Blackburn's Chris Samba is a possible defensive option

Feel free to add your own, I'm sure people have opinions on whoever is mentioned.

From The Daily Mail...

’Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City have been alerted to the news that Real Madrid may be willing to sell Gonzalo Higuain for just £15m.

‘The Argentina international scored 13 goals in 25 appearances last season despite four months out with a back injury.’

Higuain for £15M? Sounds like rubbish to me… Anyone with a sharp enough tactical eye to speculate how he would work with RVP? I think of Higuain as a poacher in the Van Nistelrooy mold, but I don’t watch many Real Madrid matches.

by King Oskar on Jun 2, 2011 9:56 AM EDT reply actions

it's hard to believe that price

but maybe there are other factors we don’t know about. This would be a great improvement of our finishing. Maybe RVP moves back and plays along side Cesc sening balls through for nasri, higuain and theo?

I can only see that happening if they keep Adepaymore.

Higuain scored 29 goals in 40 games in ‘09-’10 — if he’s available for that price, we have to put a bid in.

We were linked to Higuain last offseason but since he was coming off a solid season at Madrid no one gave it pause

I think Higuain and RVP would play pretty well together. Higuain could play up front allowing RVP to take on a more free creative role around the 18. Robin is too creative of a player to be sitting up top being a target for headers. Of course this would mean a change back to a 4-4-2 formation or Robin to play out on the left or right in the current formation which is less ideal.

I read this on ESPN Soccernet's transfer blog that made me laugh:
El Mundo Deportivo has claimed Arsenal have told Real Madrid to open the bidding for Cesc Fabregas at £50m. Quite why they’d tell them to ‘open the bidding’ at that price isn’t clear, unless they plan to reject the amount they told them to offer.

“How much would you like?”
“Start the bidding at £50m.”
“How about £50m?”
“No.”

And summer of Wenger starts...

With the signing of a teenage defender! woooo… wait, what?

Arsenal have signed Charlton Athletic’s Finland Under-21 defender Carl Jenkinson for an undisclosed fee.

Jenkinson, 19, came through the Charlton youth ranks and follows Jonjo Shelvey – who joined Liverpool last summer – in making the step up from the Addicks academy to the Premier League.

The teenager, who played for England Under-17s before switching allegiance to Finland – the country of his mother’s birth, can play anywhere across the back four.

We need a backup RB, as we don't really produce them for some reason

If Eboue is gone, and perhaps he doesn’t have the right confidence to play there as Arsene keeps switching him, and I think Eboue is the type that needs consistency, he’s a good replacement.

He’s going to be one of the top defenders in the Bundisliga in the near future. I don’t think he every got a real fair chance to break into the team. We could have given him a shot this year instead of Squillaci. Also thought we didn’t give enough of a chance to Fran Merida.

I don’t know, didn’t he just get into a fight with a team mate at the end of the season. Could use a cover DM in case we loan out Coquelin again and Frimpong doesn’t work out but there are better ways to spend 10+ million.

by Roa on Jun 13, 2011 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I like M'villa over Matudi if we get the chance to get him

but I do like Matudi. I haven’t seen as much of him as M’villa though (when he plays for my French national team). He’s a tough little guy though, who will make his presence felt in the middle of the pitch. Good thing too is that we wouldn’t lose him to the African Nations Cup obviously because he’s French, so he’d be good cover/temp replacement for Song. Put both of them in if we need more defensive steel in midfield, as he is capable of making plays offensively when called for.

If you work for a living, why do you kill yourself working?

by JaviLouis on Jun 13, 2011 10:23 PM EDT up reply actions

not familiar with M’villa, tell me about him.

The reason I’m endorsing Matuidi like this is because he has a defend first mentality, with a rugged element in his game. How he would work in the lineup rotation would sort itself out. I just love that he has a reputation of hard nosed tackling and aggression. At around 10 million or so it seems a very realistic Wengeresque signing. The downside is he is a little guy, and that concerns me a little bit in the set piece game.

Yeah you hear a lot of crazy stuff nowadays but this one intrigues me.

I really believe Wenger covets Benzema and might jump at him given the chance… Given his transfer history we all know he doesn’t normally go above 15 million but I really think he would (within reason) in this case. It’s Benzema’s availability that becomes the question. With RM potentially adding Aguero and keeping Adebayor around I think he might be the odd man out.

On Arsenal’s side, they would have to theoretically choose between him and Gervinho. If everything falls into place, Benzema for like 17 to 21 million is a possibility.

An Arsenal record bid for Spanish midfielder Mata. 18 million pounds.

Two thoughts: A) another Spaniard? What could go wrong!?

B) It is mildly warming that 18mil is Arsenal’s highest offer for any player. Arshavin’s 13mil being the previous record. Sure it has put the club where it is, but we can’t say they throw money out the door.

I doubt it.

Barcelona aren’t exactly being very fair with regards to price, or for that matter anything else.

If the board is half as petty as I am they’ll refuse to sell to Barcelona unless they exceed fair market value just because they’ve been dicking us around for the last few years.

by Roa on Jun 27, 2011 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Think about it though...

We value Cesc at 45 mil., which I doubt we’ll ever get (unless the Qatar Foundation and Unicef donate themselves, wouldn’t be too surprising would it?), but if Barca bid for at least 35-38 mil., I’d jump on it immediately. With that extra cash, not only could you bring in Mata, but also Alvarez, Gervinho, and Samba or Cahill, or both, AND re-sign Nasri. So for giving up one player, you could end up with 4 or 5 in return, sounds like a good deal to me.

And I found it quite interesting that 13 mil. is the most we’ve ever spent on a player, we’ve done quite well for the most part…

I think the current low-balling is A) to show the fans they are working for it and B) the excuse if it doesn’t come through. The deal will probably be around 40-45mil euros if it happens. (Or some version of a player swap which I’m not totally for because it’ll be to get a younger player and Arsenal already have enough of those.)

Not when Barca are pretty thin on transfer funds, and Cesc has lost another year on his contract. Not to mention Barca’s current midfield, and Cesc’s injuries over the years. I’d say even 35. mil is a reach, expect a final offer of 30 mil. tops

My bad...

Just checked in with Soccernet that Barca has made their final offer for Cesc, at 32. mil pounds, and that Arsenal will more than likely accept the deal. Interesting though, because Udinese have reported that City have dropped out of the race for Alexis Sanchez, and that Barca has made a 50 mil. deal for him. Considering that Rosell said Barca only has 45 mil. for transfer funds… Any word on any of this?

Anyone getting frustrated with the Silly Season a little earlier than normal?

The basic story is “Arsenal stars are leaving” with “Wenger vows to fix the team” and “Arsenal linked with player X” with about 8-10 different names mentioned – knowing they’d never sign all of them and next to no important signings confirmed.

Way to unsettled for my liking. I need to ignore more of this.

it's generally good to ignore it if it makes you feel bad

Last year, Arsenal were linked with about 120 players, according to http://arsenalssillyseason.blogspot.com/

We signed 4.

That’s 3.3% of rumored transfers.

Yep

I suggest an official ignoring of anything unless it’s on the official site or Arseblog.

Squeezed to Song and Bendtner and Song and Nasri oh lovely lovely lovely!
-Peter Drury, the one time his commentating has ever been acceptable.

Apparently, Arsenal today has interest in bringing in John O’Shea from United. I’m going to go ahead and call complete B.S. on that one, because there’s no way Fergie would sell him to us. A more believable word I heard though was us offering a reserve player like Lansbury and cash (not sure how much) for Gary Cahill.
