Official Transfer Thread

Since the comments on the first thread closed, here's another one. As Scrupio said there....

This thread is for all transfer related rumors, gossip, dreams, hopes, and fears.

The media is intent on the idea that Cesc Fàbregas, Samir Nasri, and Gaël Clichy will all be leaving. Gervinho is nearly a done deal. No matter what happens, we're clearly doomed to finish below Spurs and outside of the Champions League positions, just like the last five seasons. Enjoy.

Clichy is allegedly having a medical at Man City.

Two questions:

1)I have a Clichy shirt. Should I burn it if he leaves for them?

2)Does anybody else feel extremely uncomfortable with the idea of Gibbs as our starting LB?

I was in your exact shoes

Bought a Kolo Toure shirt, now I just hang it up with just the front side showing.

And yes, from what I saw of Gibbs at left back last season, it’s clear to me that he’s not ready to play for the first team.

by Scrupio on Jul 4, 2011 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

No reason to burn it

Clichy didn’t exactly force a move…he more or less played out his contract and City came calling with considerably more money than Arsenal could pay him. It’s hard to fault the guy for wanting to take the money in what will likely be his last shot at a big money deal. He had a bunch of good years for the club and was never a disruption, just hang it on the wall and remember that he was the last invincible

It's a 2008-9 away shirt

Gervinho is on his way

He’s having a medical today. I also heard that Taarabt could be on his way from QPR. Warnock said he wants to join his ’’friends’’ at Arsenal. Also, Traore is being pursued by Hamburg and Werder Bremen. Finally, I hear Thiago Motta as a possibility.

-Peter Drury, the one time his commentating has ever been acceptable.

by Aidan Gibson on Jul 9, 2011 5:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes it does.

Let’s say Arsenal accept Real’s offer and Fabregas declines the contract (Which he obviously would) that puts us in the position that Fabregas has a market value set. Right now potential suitors are being scared off by the fact that he has said he will only leave for Barcelona and the Spanish press’s statements. If Real or Man City start making bids we’ll actually have a fair market on him.

by Roa on Jul 9, 2011 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

If Cesc declines to negotiate with other teams, their bids really don't amount to anything.

If Cesc is reeally only going to negotiate with Barca (and it seems that way), any bid from any other team really doesn’t mean anything. Arsenal can go to Barca and say “Madrid are willing to pay 50 million”, but if Cesc won’t agree to go there the bid doesn’t give Arsenal any leverage. In the end, the only thing Barca is bidding against is whatever Arsenal values Cesc at, as he seems destined to either remain at the Emirates or head back home.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jul 9, 2011 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions

You guys both have a point, but...

What’s to say that Cesc doesn’t go anywhere else other than Barca? The odds of him joining Madrid are pretty slim, but to say he wouldn’t join the likes of City, or Bayern, Inter, or Milan? These teams have had better chances to win silverware than Arsenal have recently, and if that’s what Cesc wants over oh say, a couple of years before he finds his place in Barcelona (after the Xavi/Iniesta era), then why wouldn’t he jump on that? I’m glad to hear though, that after not being in the pre-season Asian tour, Cesc came out and said he was going to get healthy and he owed one to the fans, presuming that he’s preparing for another season at Arsenal.

by UMDfutbol11 on Jul 9, 2011 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I get you, but let’s be frank about Gael. I like the dude and hes been a good citizen around arsenal for a while. Never chirped off the field or caused any drama. I’m not even upset about his choice to go to City. However he’s proven to be much more liability than we thought defensively. I think LB is an important position that selling Clichy gives us a chance to upgrade going forward… both defensively and in offensive link-up play and crossing. Clichy did not have the ability to cross very well. We get all of these possibilities in addition to 7m. I will gladly take it.

Arsenal for Jose Enrique?

Seems to be the word, but Liverpool has been chasing him down for awhile now. Does Wenger splash the cash and go after him? Or do we lose him to someone else again as usual? Any opinions on Jose Enrique in general?

by UMDfutbol11 on Jul 6, 2011 7:58 PM EDT reply actions

Is he better than Clichy? Personally I don't think so.

At 25 he isn’t going to improve drastically either. So I’d prefer something else like Baines or Cissokho who are already great or could become great.

Wenger not buying a new left back

"I rate Gael (Clichy) very highly but I rate highly as well Kieran Gibbs, and he is now at an age where he has to play. And that’s the main reason behind that, to give Gibbs a chance". -Wenger

Can’t say I’m not disappointed. Now it’s time for Gibbs to prove us non-believers wrong.

by Scrupio on Jul 8, 2011 3:50 PM EDT reply actions

There was some rumor, actually more of an opinion really, and it’s pretty far out there, that Wenger would try and see if Carlos Vela could play left-back… Sounds interesting, and it’s probably worth a shot, considering that Vela will never get any first-team playing time unless he’s loaned out somewhere

if Gibbs can play 40 games this year

he could be excellent, get a run of form going, etc.

You could just about fill the Emirates with that “if”, though. Traore as backup doesn’t really sound super fun, although I wonder if Wenger wouldn’t just slide Vermaelen over in that case…

it’s all speculation at the moment, though, of course.

by Ted Harwood on Jul 9, 2011 8:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Apparently Almunia and Bendtner are in talks with other clubs.

While I’m glad we can cash in on both of them selling Bendtner means we absolutely MUST buy another striker. If Robin is injured during the African Cup of Nations we’ll be left with having to play Theo or Vela as our starting striker. Theo wouldn’t be awful but it would leave a gap at the wing and Vela could be terrible if he doesn’t find some form this season.

by Roa on Jul 9, 2011 11:18 AM EDT reply actions

I would actually love to see theo being played more centrally. He does drift in there from his wide position with the diagonal runs, but playing playing striker would give him the freedom of drifting around naturally with that wide position always as an option like Henry did. He would become a phenomenal player if he could do that.

Yea, I do like Mertesacker, he’s a great player, but at the pace that Arsenal plays at, he’s almost too big and not fast enough. I’m glad Wenger is making way for Cahill instead of Mertesacker this summer, deal should be close to being done.

by UMDfutbol11 on Jul 11, 2011 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually really like Mertesacker

He is a wonderful defender. Great in the air, has great positional awareness, good tackler, still pretty young. It’s obvious why he’s an automatic first teamer in the German National team. But he is not exactly fast and we’d have to reconsider playing such a high line if we signed him. I think he’s probably a better defender than anyone else we’ve been linked to, it’s just that he doesn’t exactly fit well within our system.

Holy Backlash.

True, he might be slow for the high line… so move it back. Let the game be played in front of Mertesacker and Vermaelen. I think the reason for the high line we’ve been playing was to mask our lack of quality at CB, with Mert that wouldn’t really be an issue anymore.

He’s a rock. Stable, composed and would make a major impact on set pieces. Not to mention MAJOR experience. Everything on the internet I see sets his market value around 10m. Compared to Cahill for 17-20m give me the guy who’s gone deep into world cups with a extraordinary physical presence.

Not really a transfer thread news bit for Arsenal, but...

I thought it was funny, because today, Soccernet’s Robbie Earle said he was happy teams like Manchester City and Madrid and Barcelona are spending all this money on players because it’s making teams step up their game. You know, because inflating the transfer market is good for the sport… I forgot where I found it, but last year I read an article where the author, who’s name I’ve also forgotten, said that the increased inflation and prices of players in the transfer market is eventually going to lead to a big bust of the world’s top teams that are spending this money. I totally agree with him, and it makes me happy knowing that teams like Arsenal who spend reasonable and still field a pretty decent team are going to be fine in the long run

by UMDfutbol11 on Jul 11, 2011 6:12 PM EDT reply actions

Will UEFA strictly enforce these rules? Or will these clubs be let off the hook because of their notoriety? It’ll be even more interesting now that clubs like Malaga and PSG have new owners with money burning holes in their pockets…

by UMDfutbol11 on Jul 11, 2011 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

"Fair Play" is kind of a joke

It comes into effect next year, but the first audits aren’t for two seasons after next year, and there are loopholes in the law so big you can drive an airliner through them. I wouldn’t hold my breath for any dramatic changes because of FIFA’s “Fair Play” regulations.

As much as I hate the flood of money that has destroyed top European soccer since the early 90's

it makes me cry how little Arsenal get from their sponsorship deals – stadium, shirt manufacturer, and shirt sponsor are all well below current market value, and were so at the time. That’s the one legacy of building the Emirates that bothers me – they took less money as a stadium sponsorship up front because Emirates gave them cash that they needed for construction.

by pdb on Jul 12, 2011 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Unfortunately (which can also mean apparently or possibly nowadays)

Tottenham are in line to pick up Samba for cash and an exchange, I’ve heard Defoe might be the player. I say, instead of wasting our time with Cahill, who’s in the last year of a contract and we could pick up for free next year, why don’t we put all of our resources into bringing in Samba instead, then we’d have a much better back line. Downing to Liverpool for 20 mil.

Vastly overpriced I’d say… I really don’t think Downing is that great, he’s good no doubt, but not 20 mil worth. I’m glad that Arsenal didn’t heavily pursue him, I don’t think it’s worth it, but Wenger really needs to jump on the wagon here soon. We can’t wait until the end of July, we have to act now, United is making moves, City and Liverpool are making moves, hell Sunderland is making a lot of moves, and Chelsea and Tottenham aren’t too far behind. We don’t even need that many players really. If we can manage to snag Cahill and Mata, along with Gervinho and Jenkinson, I’d be pretty content with that…

yeah. but there are currently 3 teams out there willing to blow gigantic wads of money

Madrid, City, Chelsea. As long as one of them bids on a player, the price will skyrocket.

So it's been slow recently, but we've got somebody!

Multiple sources have stated that a fee has been agreed to bring Joel Campbell to Arsenal. I have no idea who he plays for, but he’s from Costa Rica… That and because we’re the only team going after Juan Mata now, apparently all we have to do is offer 20 mil. and he’s ours. Sounds pretty good to me

The veteren coach of Costa Rica made this comment

"Who is Messi? Who is Neymar? Gentlemen of the press – I present to you: Joel Campbell. I discovered him playing with cans." ~Ricardo La Volpe

So he has some serious expectations on him from the people who know him, if nothing else.

by Roa on Jul 18, 2011 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

But Arsenal doesn't play with cans.

We use soccer balls!

David Moyes, I've got an offer you can't [afford to] refuse...

I saw this rumor in a few places…

EVERTON WANT BENDTNER

Here’s an interesting one.

The Daily Mail reports that Everton, who are usually in need of a striker, are keen on bringing Nicklas Bendtner to Goodison Park.

Only on loan though, given that Everton are skint.

The paper claims: ‘The 23-year-old was left out of the club’s pre-season tour to Asia and has been linked with moves to Germany and Portugal with Benfica the club showing the strongest interest. However, they are reluctant to match Arsenal’s asking price of £11million.

‘Everton have no money either and that’s why a loan would suit.’

Makes sense to us. We’d also like to see how David Moyes deals with Nick’s planet-sized ego.

No money, eh? We’ll help you with that, David… Here’s Nicky Bendtner AND £10M for Leyton Baines. Problem solved. You’re welcome.

Straight swap

Remember, Bendtner is world class.

If they would do this

I would fly to Liverpool, no, I would SWIM to Liverpool to sign the deal myself on behalf of the club.

They no we don't want him so they know they don't have to offer top dollar.

Why do we value him so high?

No way are we getting 11 mil. for Bendtner...

After the Asia tour, he’s probably fourth now behind RVP, Chamakh, and Vela. Nobody is going to pay 11 mil. for a forth line striker, I’d be happy if we got 5-7 mil. for him and sent him back to Denmark…

Wenger aims to end Cesc speculation.

By convincing him to stay?

Seriously, Arsene… the only way you are going to shut people up is by selling the boy to Barcelona. But thanks for playing the game of British Media: The Ravenous Sport Reporter Edition.

Here's what I would say

You signed a contract with Arsenal, and you will play for Arsenal.

I'm with you, and not just with Cesc

I’d be the worst manager ever, because if a superstar player (or his agent) came to me and said “hey boss! I know my contract is signed until 2014 but I want to leave for another bigger team today please”, I would say “Fine. The reserves train over there – have at it. I’ll talk to you when your contract’s up.”

Expected. He just hasn't worked out and he is getting older.

Shame because he was an excellent prospect but last season he proved he just wasn’t good enough.

by Roa on Jul 25, 2011 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Getting older?

I guess that’s all relative, but he’s been on the fringes of the first team and he’s only 20. Maybe it’s just the Chelsea fan in me, but it seems really harsh to say he hasn’t worked out when he’s that young and hasn’t really had the opportunities yet. If he was buried as an attacker on a lousy attacking team I’d be more inclined to agree, but he’s been stuck behingd some pretty high quality players in Arsenal’s attack.

by Stephen Schmidt on Jul 25, 2011 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a big deal in my opinion...

He was a good prospect, but he has nothing else to offer us. The fact that we only sold him for 1 mil. says so itself. I wish him luck, but, he just isn’t top level Arsenal material…

We lost Santi Cazorla to Malaga...

money wins out again, hopefully we can pry Mata from Valencia’s cold, dead, broke hands

by UMDfutbol11 on Jul 26, 2011 6:54 PM EDT reply actions

Well apparently...

We’re just one step away from getting Juan Mata for 15 mil. from Valencia. This came from the paper Marca, who also stated today that Cesc is going to sit down with Wenger one last time to try and plead to let him come to Barcelona, that and Cazorla just went to Malaga for 20 mil., so I doubt we’ll get Mata for less than that…

by UMDfutbol11 on Jul 27, 2011 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes that was “reported” along with rumors of a trip to London for Mata’s entourage (namely his father/agent). However, I also read that the Arsenal links may be a rouse by his dad to squeeze more money out of Valencia (or perhaps someone else).

In other words, don’t believe anything you read/hear.

should buy park chu young and maybe huntelaar, i can also see nuri sahin in arsenal xD

LFC fan here

So are you guys getting Mata?

by NC Nole on Jul 29, 2011 10:24 AM EDT reply actions

Uhhhh…. yes, yes we are. Please do not submit a bid. Thanks.

by King Oskar on Jul 29, 2011 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Most disillusioned LFC fans think we have a shot. We are out of the CL and he is already playing at Valencia. I contend that we were never really in the running.

If you guys get him at 20 million euros that is a steal.

I seriously thought Valencia would be parading him through the streets of London (Chelski, Arsenal, and THS) to drive bids up given they are broke.

I think we should sign Barton for two weeks

so that he can stick the boot into Newcastle on opening day and then leave.
