Arsenal 0 - 2 Liverpool: match report; Arsenal work hard, but too thin in end

A severely depleted Arsenal side put on a brave performance today against Liverpool at the Emirates, but in the end lacked the quality to generate scoring chances and paid the price as two late Liverpool goals brought the points to the men in black. From the kickoff, it was always going to be a tough row to hoe for the Gunners, who were forced to start Bacary Sagna out of position at left-back and give 19-year old Carl Jenkinson his Premier League debut at right back. However, the defending today was largely excellent; instead, the problems were (perhaps more predictably) all up front in attack.

Star-divide

Wenger set out a midfield of Emmanuel Frimpong, Aaron Ramsey, and Samir Nasri in the middle (he didn't have much choice). Andrei Arshavin and Theo Walcott were on the wings. From early on, they were pretty ineffectual; Arshavin had one of his "bleh" games today in a match where a little bit of the magic would've been useful. Frimpong worked hard from the off, winning tough tackles in the midfield, but his inexperience and hotheadedness showed in the eighth minute, as he earned a yellow card for interfering with a Liverpool throw-in he thought was Arsenal's (incorrectly).

As the first half wore on, Liverpool focused their attack through Stewart Downing and Dirk Kuyt pinging crosses, and Charlie Adam lobbing corners, towards ponytailed Geordie prog-rock bass player Andy Carroll. Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny looked to have everything on lockdown, until Kos's back gave out after he was shoved by Carroll. 18-year old Ignasi Miquel came on in place of the Frenchman and initially looked nervous, but he settled over the next ten minutes and did a solid job at the back.

The only header Carroll won in the early going was when Bacary Sagna had to come across to cover after 20 minutes. Luckily, Wojciech Szczesny was alert and made an excellent leaping save to his left to prevent an opener. Arsenal did well to weather the storm of Liverpool corners, Vermaelen winning every header over Carroll in the first half. Carroll earned a yellow card for shooting well after the whistle in the 28th minute before Frimpong stormed through (save one that wasn't in a dangerous position) the midfield and forced a good save from Pepe Reina from 25 yards two minutes later.

Nasri made a great run and had a shot as the half wore on but missed just wide. Downing shot well wide soon after, and just before halftime, Nasri stepped up and launched a shot about twenty feet over the crossbar. Reaching halftime at 0-0 was no small feat under the circumstances, and one could argue that Arsenal actually looked the better of the two sides.

In reality, both sides' attack was kind of a platter of grey sludge, but hey, small victories, you know?

Arsenal began the second half strongly, retaining possession more effectively than they had in the first half, despite Arshavin's best efforts to give the ball away often. Martin Kelly took a good pass from Carroll in Arsenal's area and crashed an effort of the side netting and post; Arsenal looked to break, but couldn't string passes together effectively in midfield. Substitutes warming up, Wenger sat in the rain and watched, and waited.

Walcott drove in a low cross that Jamie Carragher cut out before Ramsey was too easily dispossessed by a tracking-back Roy Batty Kuyt, and then it almost happened. van Persie turned a cutback from Arshavin on goal in the 68th minute, but Reina managed to save with his feet before berating Martin Atkinson for not calling a foul on Arshavin, who had shoved over a man twice his size before his pass.

If Arshavin pushes you over, you weren't really standing in the first place, were you?

At this point, it started to go downhill for Arsenal. Frimpong left his foot high and took out Lucas pretty hard, and Atkinson reached for the second yellow. Early bath for the young English linebacker, and he will also miss next weekend's match against Manchester United; with Alex Song already suspended, there's, well, there's a problem there.

And there was a problem for Arsenal, too, because the defense was starting to be stretched with the sending-off, the introduction of Luis Suarez for Andy Carroll (I can't believe the latter cost more), and Raul Meireles coming on for Kuyt. Suarez forced a save from Szczesny, and then it finally happened.

Liverpool combined well on the edge of Arsenal's area, and as Miquel tried to clear, his attempt went straight off the chest of Ramsey, and looped over Szczesny and into the net. There was some suspicion of offside on the initial through-ball, but no call was made, and Liverpool took the lead. It wasn't coming back.

Nicklas Bendtner came on for Walcott, joining Henri Lansbury, who had come on for Arshavin, but it was too late. Arsenal struggled to cross well, and before too long, it was 2-0. Lucas, Meireles, and Suarez combined easily, the latter tapping home a square ball behind the exhausted Arsenal defense in the 91st minute to seal all three points for the visitors.

There is much work to be done.

Oh, and one final note to all the supporters at the stadium today who left because it started raining: there are people who would sell a kidney to sit where you are sitting; what is your problem? It's just rain, you nincompoops. Show some support. The team needs you more than they have since, oh, probably 1997. Wimps.

Well, I guess it could be worse

Everton just lost at home to QPR, and they haven’t even sold their good players yet.

That is bad

When you have a pretty decent squad like Everton does, you should not be losing to teams who’s best player is DJ Campbell. Everton are always known to start off pretty slowly though

As gloomy as the outlook is now

I can’t wait to see how it looks after next week’s matches. Very serious chance of being out of the CL, with 1 point, no goals from 3 PL games.

The Bright Side

Vermaelen looked great in the game today imo. He’s going to be a rock at the back for us for the next 7-8 years if he stays healthy.

Also, maybe this will inspire Wenger to finally make his transfer moves. Samba was left out of the Blackburn squad today, I assume someone is in for him – not sure it’s Arsenal though.

I thought the defense was incredibly solid until Frimpong went out.

And I liked the way Frimpong played aside from the deserved bookings, of course. Jenkinson and Miquel likewise looked just fine given the circumstances. The entire defense has been the only bright spot of the season, and no depth in the world is going to fix the ludicrous numbers of injuries and red cards they’ve had thus far.

The midfield, however, has been so, so poor as a whole. The intricate passing and build-up that drew me to support Arsenal in the first place is just gone.

It’s the exact opposite of what we have been complaining about for three years now. We are watching some otherworldly Bizarro Arsenal this year.

I agree to a certain extent

but with Kos and Djourou both injured, I think Samba is needed. I agree that Miquel didn’t look bad and I wouldn’t mind him as a 4th CB this season, but I wouldn’t exactly feel comfortable with him starting against Man U while I feel better with a pairing of Vermaelen – Samba.

I do agree that the defense has played well and finding a creative midfielder should be Arsenal’s most pressing concern.

And maybe RB

I like Jenks so far, and if Song and Frimpong could keep their heads on straight, we ought to be set at DM. But pretty much every other position needs help.

isn't that the greatest irony?

Last season we were all more worried about GK than any other spot. This season we are fine in GK and worried about everywhere else.

7-8 years?

What makes you think this world class defender will be at Arsenal for that long? He wants trophies, he wants to be part of a very good team because he’s just that good. If Wenger isn’t going to spend and replace Fab and Nasri expect the likes of Verm and RvP leave for bigger clubs.

There's developing youth and then there's this. In the squad today:

Frimpong 19
Miquel 18
Ramsey 20
Szczesny 21
Jenkinson 19
Walcott 22
Lansbury 20
Oxlade-Chamberlain 18
Miyachi 18

On the other hand

Walcott is a top-level international for England, Ramsey is the damned captain for Wales, and Szczesny is irrefutably a badass. The rest, I see your point.

Had them in only for completeness

I agree, we have some young players who are already world-class. As for the rest, I just fear if there are a couple bad seasons in the near future then they’ll either lose confidence or lose faith in the club and move on.

Otherwise, if we can just hold our collective breaths for two more years, the foundation we have is going to be incredible. Problem is we’re all already blue in the face.

I love Ramsey

I do. But captain of Wales is not really that big an accomplishment. They’re in the UK, so they get a ton of English-language coverage and some of their players get playing time in the visible EPL. But it’s not much different than being captain of Latvia. Wales has roughly 3M people, ranked 112 by FIFA; Latvia roughly 2M and ranked 83rd.

My point was not that he was the captain OF WALES

but that he is THE CAPTAIN of Wales, if that makes any sense.

by Noleforever9399 on Aug 20, 2011 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

What really irks me

Is that we have all these gaping holes and need for depth virtually throughout the squad. In particular, a gaping, Fabregas-sized hole in central midfield and serious need for depth at CB and LB — if not a starting LB (believing we need only “depth” at LB is to believe that Gibbs is capable of staying healthy and playing at a top level). And what does Arsene do?

Splash big cash on a kid winger not even 18 at signing (Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain), which follows signing other not-ready wingers Campbell and Miyaichi. All 3 are players for the future — none likely to be key contributors in this critical first post-Fabregas season. And those 3 followed the signing of Gervinho, also a winger, but one who looks ready right now at least. So we have those 4 on the wing along with Walcott, Arshavin, and Nasri (for now anyway). But we are still terribly, inexcusably light in the center. Beyond Wilshere (amazing), we have Ramsey (very promising, but still much to learn), Song (solid holding mid), a mediocre & oft-injured squad player (Diaby), a liability (Rosicky), and a host of unproven kids (granted, with considerable promise) in Frimpong, Lansbury, and Eastmond.

Maybe we’ll all be delighted we have AOC in 3 years when he is lighting up world football, but right now we need someone with established first-team quality who can play in the middle of the park. We might just scrape through against Udinese and enjoy Champions League football for another season anyway, but unless Wenger spends some effing money on players (a) in positions we need and (b) who can play now, I have serious doubts that we’ll be worrying about a Champions League qualifier next August. Instead, at best we will be looking forward to Europa League games.

Ha

First the problem was defence, now its up front.

by meadow on Aug 20, 2011 1:46 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

For me, it's the middle

Not the front that’s the problem. We couldn’t keep the ball with any consistency or do much dangerous with it. Not really the front players problem – they need service. Although, I guess it depends a little on whether you categorize Arshavin today as in the middle or up front. He was dire. Would love to see his pass completion %s.

We're using lots of width

But the quality of the wide players is poor…they’re too direct. There’s no interplay with the midfield that someone like Juan Mata or Eden Hazard (Or Arshavin 2 years ago) would give, if that makes sense.

Squeezed to Song and Bendtner and Song and Nasri oh lovely lovely lovely!

Our wings are fast up the flanks

and then they like to cut inside rather than play in a cross. And Van Persie doesn’t play high enough so that when a cross does come in, he’s on the end of it. How many crosses to nobody did we see today? Walcott and Arshavin got into plenty of good forward positions and then wasted them with bad crosses or trying to cut in through defenders.

Now with mustache guarantee!

by HoodRiverDuck on Aug 20, 2011 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Bit awkward there...

Van Persie is not on the end of any of our wingers’ crosses because he’s not advanced far enough into the box.

by HoodRiverDuck on Aug 20, 2011 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a good start to the 125th

All in all, everybody played their hearts out today, even Nasri, who probably played his last game for the red and white today, he brought the ball up many times and took a couple shots, some of them were pretty decent attempts too.

The defense today looked great aside from the own goal. Miquel played the ball correctly, trying to clear it, but Ramsey was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don’t understand though why Wenger would place Jenkinson at right back and place Sagna on the left. I’d try and get Jenkinson to learn and get accustomed to being a replacement for Clichy, he definitely has the skill set.

As far as the attacking side of the field though, we need some desperate work. I’m thoroughly convinced that maybe it’s time to let Arshavin go, he had a great first year, but now he’s almost too inconsistent to place in a starting XI, and there’s no way somebody that we pay that much is going to want to come off the bench as a sub. Walcott had his usual pace, but his vision is so… crap. So many crosses to nobody, so many missed opportunities to Arshavin and van Persie, etc. I think maybe it is time to have Walcott play as a striker or right behind van Persie in a 4-4-2

Speaking of the 4-4-2, we’re not left with much of a choice without a defensive midfield. I predict that for United, we’ll have the same back four, depending on Kos’ health, Arshavin, Ramsey, Lansbury, and Walcott in the middle, and van Persie and Bendtner up front. We’re stripped bare, and we need replacements quickly.

I guess that out of all of this, the only positive light is that, according to L’Equipe and Sky France, we’re planning upwards to a 35 mil. bid for Eden Hazard, I would gladly welcome that, no matter if it’s out of our frugal nature, and I sure everybody else would too. We are also still being linked to Jagielka, Zarate, and Lucho. Looks like we’re losing Mata to Chelsea, and calls for Jadson are off because now, apparently talks with City about Nasri are down the shitter, September 1st needs to come quickly…

The year 1928

Arsenal splashed out the worlds first ever five-figure transfer fee(£10,000 for David Jack- 113 goals in 181 matches, 3 league cups).
Now, if Wenger could just spend some cash, sometimes all one needs is just one world class player.

by meadow on Aug 20, 2011 5:03 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

One world class player isn't what Arsenal need right now

They need depth in defense and the midfield badly, and they could use several versatile players who can cover a number of positions. Blowing all their money on one guy would be the worst thing they could do besides not spending at all.

by Stephen Schmidt on Aug 20, 2011 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

The squad's problems are certainly multi-fold, but it's difficult to buy depth without class.

Who can we get to give our midfield some real depth, who wouldn’t mind playing behind Wilshere/Ramsey? Or should we just get a top class midfielder and put one of them as the rotating benchplayer? Same thing goes for LB/CB. CB in particular we had 4 defenders, but in the space of two games we are suddenly down to 1 regular rotation player in Vermaelen. Do we patch up this hole with Jags or Samba who will eventually take over the starting role, or do we risk ending up with another Squillaci? I don’t envy Wenger right now.

Well my first choice if I was Arsene would be M'vila

We were linked with him earlier, and he’s just superb. I’m starting to hear his name come up with Arsenal, and he’s certainly in their price range and probably an upgrade over Song right now.

by Stephen Schmidt on Aug 20, 2011 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Sport+ says we got a 20 mil. bid for M'vila denied today

Not sure if that’s reliable, but all signs point to us going on a transfer raid in the next week and a half, let’s see what we can come up with!

I think we need a great signing, like Eden Hazard

And also another midfielder and defender. What has been clear from the first 3 games though is that we need more creativity. Ramsey, Arshavin, Gervinho, Rosicky and Nasri just aren’t getting the job done.

Squeezed to Song and Bendtner and Song and Nasri oh lovely lovely lovely!

Apparently we're getting closer

As usual, Arsenal and Wenger are mum on the topic, but sports media in France have been talking about a deal for Eden Hazard for the past couple days, somewhere in the range of 30-35 mil. I say it’s definitely worth it, mostly because Gervinho and Hazard will be reunited once more!!! Just kidding….

by UMDfutbol11 on Aug 20, 2011 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd be pretty shocked if a deal comes to fruition

I don’t see Arsene spending that much, although the current climate could force his hand. I also don’t see Lille selling the best player in the league this fall, as they have Champions League football and are opening a brand new stadium next season. I could be wrong, but I really doubt they are willing to let him go for less than Cesc just brought in.
