Transfer Deadline Day Thread!

Will this man be turning up in London Colney later? Who knows!

Good morning, everyone. It's Transfer Deadline Day! Yay! For Jim White and the rest of the Sky Sports News crew, it's Christmas in August. For the next 12 or so glorious hours, many fanciful rumours will be made up, many players "dream move" will be made, and many people will take the piss out of transfer reporting (case in point--Just saw Mario Goetze going to an estate agent in St Albans).

For Arsenal, this is the day that could, more than any other day, define our season. Yes, it is that important. Our midfield, quite frankly, is lacking in creativity and talent. We cannot wait for Tomas Rosicky to rediscover his 2007/08 form, we cannot rely on Andrey Arshavin to become the real Andrey Arshavin. Quite simply, Arsene Wenger must buy a creative midfielder, and possibly a wide forward in the mould of Samir Nasri. Eden Hazard, Mario Götze and Marvin Martin are the reported chief targets. The first one is virtually impossible (despite Lille signing Joe Cole), the second one highly unlikely. The third one is the likeliest. There are also reports of Arsenal signing Yossi Benayoun, and/or Florent Malouda. The first would please me, as a squad player, the second not so much.

There is also, of course, the other option: Arsene Wenger signs someone not on the radar. Ricardo Montolivo? Niko Kranjcar? A sly bid for Luka Modric! All, my friends, are within the realm of possibility on transfer deadline day, and that is why it drives men to jump up and down when announcing the signing of Papa Bouba Diop for West Ham and then embarrass themselves talking to, and indeed following, managers driving around in cars.

So, get comfortable, have the coffee nearby and the snacks at hand. This year, the window slams shut at 11 PM BST. That is 6 PM EDT, 5 PM CDT and 3 PM PDT. It's the latest I ever remember it, much to the media's excitement.

Good morning, everyone

So far, Arsenal haven’t signed anyone. If they do, however, comment and discuss here, and then we’ll get a bigger post up.
We’re also looking for the confirmation of Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos.
Finally, you can follow more transfers and rumours at SB Nation.

Gilles Sunu on permanent move to Lorient, according to Matt Spiro; Henri Lansbury on season loan to West Ham, via Duncan Castles.

I know I have a wish list

But please, at least get players whom you can count on coming off the bench.

I have a nearly empty calendar today, so I’ll be following today closely. Hope we make the most of these next 10+ hrs….

What happens to the "transfer kitty" if we don't spend it?

Is it just absorbed into the club’s operating budget? Or is it saved for future signings? My point, I guess, is if we like a player and offer 22M, but his team wants 30M, what is the harm of paying “over the odds” since we have the money?

I am no economic expert

but Swiss Ramble is, and he did a post in May about our transfer budget. From what I can gather just by skimming it again, there is a fund that is set aside strictly for certain uses – primarily transfer fees, but it can also be used for distinct improvements to the stadium, youth and first team training facilities, etc. So I think the fabled big transfer war chest remains after the window closes and would be available for use in the January window, if we’re so inclined. Unless the club decide to add another tier to the Emirates.

by King Oskar on Aug 31, 2011 8:44 AM EDT reply actions

Okay, good news and bad news.

I have to give the bad news first, for it to make sense chronologically.

The bad news is that according to David Ornstein from BBC, Eden Hazard is pretty much definitely not moving in this transfer window. Lille have told him there are no inquiries presently. The good news is a little more complicated. Joe Cole’s gone to Lille on loan for the season. There were rumors earlier that part of the deal was a clause giving Liverpool right of first refusal on Hazard. However, also according to Ornstein, that is false.

So we probably won’t be signing him today, but at least Liverpool won’t be either.

If you’re going to post an image, can you please limit it to 250 pixels or so? To do this, when you paste the image link into the body of your comment, change

img src=“http://picturegoeshere.gif” (this is in angle brackets but I can’t get angle brackets to display without SBN thinking it’s a command)

to

img height=“250” src=“http://picturegoeshere.gif”

try not to go bigger than 300 pixels if you can – it really helps those of us that share an office with the boss. Thanks.

With the backup XI being?

Arshavin – Young (Ju) – Chamakh/Bendtner
Rosicky – Ramsey/Frimpong
Coquelin
Gibbs – Kos – Djourou – Jenks
Fabianski

That still leaves out Chamberlain, Chamakh/Bendtner, Squilacci, Diaby, Miquel and Ryo

I'm suggesting the Ju should be the target man/striker

Bendtner has been played better on the right wing and Arsene used him a lot out there towards the end of the season. And I don’t want Chamakh playing in the center until he figures out how to play soccer again.

I prefer him not to be on the pitch at all

but if he’s out there, I want him on the wing. His passing ability is too poor for him to anchor the attack in the middle, and his dribbling skills are too weak to beat a central defender. On the wing, he gets to make easier passes, and he has shown some ability to take on left backs to get into the box. Overall, i think the team plays better when he’s on a wing.

The English First Division/Premier League is almost 150 years old and has a long history of producing outstanding players and teams

Major American club soccer dates back to the early 1970’s and has a history of producing players. I’m certainly not anti-American soccer (I’m a Timbers season ticket holder, and have been for three years now), but the level of play is such in England that, well, why would an average English person who didn’t grow up in America or have any connection to America or American soccer give a damn about the best player on FC Dallas? Or about Clint Dempsey, other than the fact that he’s a useful player?

Dempsey is a good player. I don’t, however, expect English people to fawn all over him simply because he’s American, when there’s dozens of English players that are better than him. that’s not nationalistic, it’s a fact – you could say the same about people in Spain, Germany, or Italy.

by pdb on Aug 31, 2011 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

There is a difference between not fawning over a player

and writing him off for no good reason. For every fan who thinks Dempsey’s better than he is because of his passport, there’s got to be one who thinks he’s worse than he is for the same reason. He’s pretty good, probably a squad player at Arsenal – not Messi, and not Almunia, but certainly useful.

Yeah, I'm not writing him off at all

and he would be a useful player. I just get tired of the PLEEEEEASE LOVE AMERICAN SOCCER PLAYERS EUROPE OH PLEASE WE’RE OVER HERE HELLO HI THERE YES US attitude that a lot of US-based soccer fans (again, not you or anyone here specifically) seem to have when an American player has a modicum of success in a major European league.

Respect is earned, not given by nationality, and the US is making slow inroads but it doesn’t help that every time an American player does something notable a large chunk of the American fan base goes insane for it.

by pdb on Aug 31, 2011 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I get your point

but I for one think it’s great when the American fan base goes insane for a soccer player. All part of growing the game here.

Personally I understand Dempsey isn’t a superstar, but I think he’s twice the player (for example) Landon Donovan is, and I would love to see him in an Arsenal shirt in whatever role. I find it irritating that he seems to have to prove himself over and over again to new managers, or the English fan base, or whomever.

Now with mustache guarantee!

by HoodRiverDuck on Aug 31, 2011 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I would disagree about Dempsey v. Donovan

Landon Donovan’s a phenomenal player. I don’t watch Dempsey enough to do an in-depth comparison of the two but Donovan’s the best player the US has produced in years.

by pdb on Aug 31, 2011 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I actually like Donovan's play

I think I’m blinded mostly by the fact that he seems like a total douchebag. (Plus, he tends to disappear for 10-15 minute stretches at a time) I watch the USMNT a lot, and I watch Fulham when they’re on, so I watch Deuce a lot. I’m always impressed with him, not because he does one thing brilliantly, but does everything well, and doesn’t have a real weakness in his game (maybe he could use more pace). He’s very versatile, (I think he could play AM, wing, striker even), rarely injured which is to say I think he’d do well at Arsenal as a squad player if not first choice.

Now with mustache guarantee!

by HoodRiverDuck on Aug 31, 2011 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

he is a douchebag

and I think his disappearing act is largely due to the sub-optimal quality of play in MLS. he was really solid for Everton last year and could definitely make a career over there.

by pdb on Aug 31, 2011 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

True enough

But I think that actually argues in favor of Dempsey. He can make others around him better, whereas Donovan seems to need quality around him to shine.

Now with mustache guarantee!

by HoodRiverDuck on Aug 31, 2011 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean, realistically

Aside from Donovan, the current crop of American players in the EPL (Dempsey, Holden, and Howard) are probably the only American’s who can make a top tier league in Europe. You could make a case for Brek Shea, but I think the ones playing in the EPL can play on that level. Aside from that, we’re still quite inexperienced and not even close on that level of play, and probably won’t be for quite some time

Discounting someone because of their nationality is bullshit

You’re missing the entire argument. No one said they have to respect Demspey because of his nationality, I’m just saying that discounting him because of his nationality is wrong. If Demspey was English and put in the same performances he has, many people who are currently turning their nose up at him would not be doing so.

I’m just asking fans not to discount a player on account of his American nationality. You seem to think that means everyone has to love him because he’s American, but that simply does not logically follow from what I said.

In Hue We Trust

by LouisMurphy'sLaw on Aug 31, 2011 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm looking at it from the opposite side though

Discounting someone because of their nationality is bullshit

100% agreed. But I’m coming at it from the other side of the coin – hyping someone because of their nationality is also bullshit. Just because a player is American doesn’t mean other nations need to take that player seriously if they’re just a league-average player (or at least any more seriously than they’d take any other league average player).

I’m not saying you specifically do this, LouisMurphy, and I’m certainly not trying to start a fight – I’ve just seen a lot of the sort of thing I mentioned above in the last season or two and it bugs me.

by pdb on Aug 31, 2011 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not trying to start a fight either

I just happen to hang out with a bunch of English ex-pats in San Francisco who seem to think it’s impossible for an American to be good enough for a top club, just because he’s an American. It’s annoying and I always get in arguments over it with them.

In Hue We Trust

double standard?

An American in a top Euro league is a big deal, to Americans. Although, George John, gets “Blackburn reject” chanted by Seattle fans last night. There is a difference in being a role player or starter for a top flight club, rather than just be another body in the line up. I think this is where the true argument lies now.

by Timothy Winning Voyles on Aug 31, 2011 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Americans definitely can be good enough for a top club

I just want that to be the rule and not the exception. In 10-15 years it probably will be.

by pdb on Aug 31, 2011 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

It's ok bro, that argument is everywhere

It’s just a product of soccer being the scapegoat here against the likes of football, baseball, basketball, hockey, etc. It’s always really been that way, and probably will be for some time, although soccer has made a lot of progress in the past decade. The first year I came to college I found so many people who knew about and played the game, I think as younger generations come along and grow, the game will definitely adapt into American culture

Although Chris Murphy at Soccernet says we should only bid 6 mil., not a good time to be low balling by half the amount Chris, but what do you guys think about this one? It’s looking like it’s going to go through. Arteta is 29, had only 3 goals and 5 assists last year in 29 games, again, with Fulham on the pounce for Ruiz, I say we should be going after Dempsey, 10 mil. for him is a great deal compared to Arteta

well, either way would be good news right?

Good news, we signed Arteta. So we have more experience in midfield.

Good news, we didn’t sign Arteta. So Jack’s place is secure.

Good news, we are renaming Jack Wilshere’s shin Arteta. The other wants to be known as Benayoun.

This.

by elfboy_ on Aug 31, 2011 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's say Arteta is Arsenal's last move of the day, win or lose

You would have to call this a “plug the holes” approach wouldn’t you considering their ages and cost? Not complaining really, I love a bargain and the potential is there for these signings to really come good (German, Brazil pedigree, S. Korean captain). Besides, we had to do it.

We would have kept the large part of the transfer kitty in tact. Assess for a year and then, hopefully, splash the cash early next summer for Goetze or Hazard, Martin, M’vila, etc

by OvBismarck on Aug 31, 2011 1:31 PM EDT reply actions

As long as we make the CL, yeah

But there’s no shot in hell we have of signing those players if we’re not in it. Not as long as we continue to have the salary structures we have in place.

Yes, CL a must

I just wish they would try harder for Martin this window. The price quoted for him don’t seem much more than the 30 yr old Arteta. Sochaux just don’t want to sell.

That one day, we’re going to have a $150m transfer fund (built up from future transfer window surpluses) and still haggle clubs down from $6.5m to $6.25m.

I see no reason not to negotiate and haggle to save money

the problem I have is when that leads to moves failing. If we have the cash and the deadline looms, make a deal if the player’s good enough.

I don't mind haggling over players like Arteta or Benayoun,

as long as we don’t try to haggle when it comes to signing top quality players. I mean, we’ve lost quite a number of signings in the past to our rivals over the years – Man Utd outbid us by a little over 3-5 mil pounds for C.Ronaldo.

This.
