Arsenal vs. Swansea City
Kickoff: 10 AM EDT
Emirates Stadium, in the heart of the big city
Good morning, everyone. Feel free to comment on all the action below as Arsenal seek out their first win of the year. Here are the lineups:
Arsenal (4-3-3): Szczesny; Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs; Frimpong, Arteta, Ramsey; Walcott, Arshavin, Van Persie.
Sub sandwiches: Fabianski, Santos, Djourou, Coquelin (apparently), Benayoun, Chamakh, Park (who apparently managed to get his visa sorted out last night and made it to Jolly Ol' in time.)
Swansea: Vorm, Williams, Taylor, Caulker, Rangel, Britton, Graham, Sinclair, Dyer, Allen, Agustien.
Swan subs (delicious!): Dobbie, Lita, Moore, Bessone, Tremmel, Gower, Richards.
Arsenal sit in 17th with a goal difference of -8, so while a win today of any kind is good, a win by a lot would really, really be good. Whether or not it's possible depends a good deal on how well Arsenal press and how much Swansea sit back. Fingers crossed.
PREMIER LEAGUE IS BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK

Last year maybe, but this year we need to win this game, by a few goals at that.
Can’t take any risks on youngsters.
Also, please excuse my random anti-Arshavin outbursts which are bound to come out at least a couple times during the game

The only consolation I have is when Gervinho is back
Arshavin will be out of the starting XI. Maybe released back into the wild… so he can be shot. Or rediscover his form, whichever is more humane… for us.
This.
Gunnersaurus available on the bench today?

I'm pretty happy.
Arteta has come in and shown he can function in the midfield and provide the ball. The defense has look reasonably sound. Arsenal have been pressuring and aside from a brief walking attack thanks to Swansea being entirely in their own half and backing off, it has been a decently fluid performance. Unpolished, but I think there is a lot of adjusting to do with this team.
And yeah, it’s only Swansea, but given some of last season’s results, until Arsenal regain the ability to be confident and dominant at home again, there is no true “only (team x)” games.
Arshavin looks good today

But it's not dinner.
It’s lunch. I wonder if there are tailgates with Chick Fil-A I can go mooch off of?

Someone did say it was like the Arsenal of old.
Loads of cards and one – nil. It’s the 80s all over again! Break out the big hair!
Not the win I wanted, but a win nonetheless.
Step in the right direction. I think Gervinho plays next week, so there is that.

looks like well dead really

Watch out EPL, and Champions League
we taking the cups.
Pathetic. I don’t mind losing, but the half-assed D is beginning to really annoy me. That is just not how Arsenal defends, ever. It is a question of committment and attitude and outside of Vermaelen (no opinion on Merte yet) we don’t have it and that pisses me off to no end.

we were a latice and a spazzy, half volley away from losing.
We will score goals, perhaps not against top competition should our collective first touch not improve, but I worry about our defensive mentality. We should bring back TA and pay him a butt load to train/indoctrinate the CBs and wingers.

we also had chances we didn't take, so.

I hope so
It’s not going to get much easier than Swansea at home and this game was a massive struggle for the entire 90 minutes. I’m sure the squad will gel and get better, but they have a lot of improving to do if they want to challenge on any fronts this year.

Honestly, I didn't think the defense did too badly today.
Yeah, there were some “desperate” moments, but there are in any game. Swansea did not look that bad of a team, organized and had a bit of a go at times in the game. They rather strike me as a very snake bitten team, particularly in their previous 0-0 games in which they were unlucky not to score.
There is a bit of a curve for the current defense, with Gibbs not in full flight yet and Mersacker being new, but overall they weren’t terrible today. Give it a bit of time.
I think the real struggles were in the midfield where the link up was problematic with Frimpong looking over his head for much of the match and Benayoun not knowing the script just yet. Again, give it time. Slot Gervinho and Song back into this squad and let them grow and we’ll have a very functional and hopefully strong team. It isn’t the title challengers of the past 10 years, but it will be a team to reckon with.
realistically it couldve been 3-0
but lets not go there

We had three new players in, our 2nd choice DM, and our tactics weren't right
and we still won. We’ll get better.

It's unbelievable how good the Manchester teams are this year
Other than Arsenal games, the Manchester Derbies are going to be worth watching
