Park Chu-Young scores hat trick for South Korea b/w Arsenal internationals open thread
Good morning, everybody. With a number of international fixtures up and running today, this is the place to comment on all the action that is going on.
A quick roundup of the Gunners who have had fixtures already:
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain put in an excellent shift for the England U21s yesterday as they crushed Azerbaijan 6-0. He looked lively for his 76 minute shift and played a big part in both of...
...Henri Lansbury's goals for the side. Lansbury, of course, is on loan now at Championship side West Ham United, but this kind of form can only be good for his development. Hopefully he can continue to improve his game and challenge for a spot in Arsenal's midfield down the road.
Park Chu-Young did serious work in his World Cup qualifier against Lebanon, scoring a hat-trick to help his nation win 6-0. His first was a quite nice redirected volley as he came flying in from the right; his second an unstoppable header from a corner kick (one thing we didn't mention during all the news on Wednesday is that he has a FORTY-ONE INCH VERTICAL*), and his third absolutely fizzed in low at the far post from 15 yards.
Please, Mr. Park: keep this up.
Other Gunners in action today include:
Yossi Benayoun in Israel vs. Greece (underway right now)
Per Mertesacker in Germany vs. Austria (245 PM EDT)
Theo Walcott in Bulgaria vs. England (215 PM)
Aaron Ramsey in Wales vs. Montenegro (245)
Laurent Koscielny and Bacary Sagna in Albania vs. France (300)
Andrei Arshavin in Russia vs. Macedonia (1200)
Robin van Persie in Netherlands vs. San Marino (230)
Wojciech Szczesny in Poland vs. Mexico (friendly)
Thomas Vermaelen in Azerbaijan vs. Belgium (1200)
Feel free to comment on all the action throughout the day.
--------------------------------------------------------------
* FORTY-ONE INCH VERTICAL. My god. Derrick Rose has a 41" vertical.

He’s literally a genius….Now I’m worried that him and the Professor are going to be too busy discussing quantum physics, string theory and philosophical dilemmas to pay attention to the game.

By the way

When looking at the English men's basketball team page on wikipedia I found this gem on there
“The English national basketball team is usually ranked top five among the top things that do not exist, along with funerals of midgets, bespectacled saints and children of prostitutes named “Junior”."
I did not expect this, but hey if it’s on wikipedia it must be true.

Vermaelen not in the squad for Belgium
Injury must still be bothering him.
However, everyone’s favorite transfer target is playing for them.
I wonder if he'll be ready for Swansea
If not, that’s just about a definite debut for Mertesacker.

Couple of questions.
Are these Euro qualifiers?
And have we been told yet exactly what vermy’s actual injury entails?

as to the first part:
Yes, they are all Euro qualifiers, with the exception of the Korea match (WC qualifier) and Poland vs. Mexico (obviously). I should have made that more clear.
As for TV, I don’t know…nobody’s said one way or the other what the prognosis is yet.

Hate to break up a thread about how freaking ugly Van Nistelrooy was but I believe he was referring to a Mr. Robin Van Persie.
We know. It was just some fun and games.
I really like RvP (Dutch & Arsenal, come on), but he’s not on my All-Time favorite list. I only have 5 players on that list. The aforementioned three, Tony Adams and Thierry Henry.
I’m a fan of RvP (as well as Sneijder, Messi, Per & Verminator) but they haven’t reached all-time just yet. And unless Messi joins us – he never will. Sneijder if he joins any of our rivals – can suck off too.
I hope RvP does become a legend for both this club and his country so I can expand my list to 6 all-time favorites. :)
This.
Wim Jonk or Jaap DeGroot?
(not serious, I just like saying those names)

Let me give you my reasons
1. Germany: Technically I am of German stock (there’s a lot of Welsh too, but whatever). Also my mother lived there when she was growing up.
2. Holland: I started because of van Persie and Bergkamp, I stayed for the style and the not-being-the-Spanish. Also the names. Oh, the names.
3. Any Arsenal player: Other than that I don’t care who wins, I just root for our guys to do well and survive.

I've got a couple I root for aside from the U.S.
For one, France, half my decent is French, my mother’s parents were born and raised in France and lived through the war, then moved over to the States afterward, so it’s just kind of natural. I also root for England now because Wilshere is my favorite player, but I’d take France over England in any match. So, based on those facts, last year’s World Cup really, really sucked… lol

Will look superb next to
Park with his 41" vertical powers home an unstoppable header.
Yes… very superb indeed.
This.
11-0 final score.
Highest margin of victory and most goals ever scored for Holland.
Context:
Holland – #1 in the world.
San Marino – tied #203 (and dead last) in the world.
This.
U.S. 0-1 Costa Rica
Kind of an Arsenal international game (Joel Campbell, no idea if he played, nobody had names on their backs). On the other note, U.S. looked great in the first half, lively, great possession, lots of chances and shots throughout the whole game. Klinsmann has a great setup going for this team, but a lack of finishing and experience killed this one for the States, the defense by itself is quite shaky, especially without Chrendolo at the back, and that’s pretty much what gave up the only goal. But the attacking presence from the U.S. tonight was spectacular, better than any of the times that Bradley was at the helm, with some help with fine touches and finishing, this team could be a top international squad in a few years, but right now, they’re young and inexperienced, kind of like Arsenal really.
It's Absolute Mustard!

Is that for the African Cup of Nations?
And speaking of the ACON, who else do we have to worry about leaving other than Gervinho and Chamakh?
It's Absolute Mustard!
"Do you think we need one more...? You think we need one more... Alright we'll get one more"
Frimpong if he really breaks out, though I'm still hoping England look at him.
Doubt it though.
Song is the main loss.Though the availability of Frimpong and Coquelin will make up for it. Gervinho is a loss but Arshaivn is more than capable of deputizing and Chamakh should be below Park anyway. (If Robin or Park get hurt I’m really hoping to see our next young superstar Benik Afobe start playing cup games anyway.)
Which is very very possible
They’re second in their group, and as only results against the 1st and 3rd place teams are counted in the ranking of the best second place teams, they’ve only got 2 points. If they lose or draw away to Congo, they’re out. Even if they win, there are 6 teams with 4 points who can finish ahead of them.
AAARRRRRRRSSSSSHHHHHHHHAAAAAAVVVVVIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNN!
Dream goal!
I think I'm misreading something
the BBC says “In groups A to J, the pool winners plus best two runners-up qualify for finals with co-hosts Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.” So that means the top three teams in each group qualify, yeah? So Cameroon are definitely through?
But that doesn’t make any sense…it should be top two teams, not three, in each group, right? So there’s…wait. Because there were 16 teams in the finals last time…hmm. Yeah, so 24 teams this time? If the top two from each group qualify?
It's 16. Wiki is much more clear

I watched that one and in addition to scoring at the end he basically had a hand in every good move they make. Created a few goals and was a threat all day long.
Very positive international break from Arsenal players. Hopefully they carry this over into club play. That 8-2 definitely galvanized them.
