Around SBN: New York Giants Super Bowl XLVI Ring Unveiled

In other news: sun rises in east, sets in west. I'm not sure I'd call this a surprise, but it is nice to see a manager bite the hand that feeds him, even if the bite isn't very tough.

And there is pretty convincing evidence

that having a winter break helps players’ health and national team success—Germany being the main example.

Okay, well, I guess it’s not super convincing, necessarily, but having things get more congested in the middle of the season probably doesn’t help.

I've read that as well

but I think what happens is not any long term damage like fatigue and poor national teams. It’s more the short term impact: really shitty football. Everybody has dropped points and played poorly recently (except maybe Spurts) which just makes everybody frustrated and angry. It also becomes a minefield for injuries. If you come through it in one piece with a handful of points all you are is lucky. Crunching games together like this doesn’t really prove anything.

Anything you don't play now is going to get crunched later

As long as we insist on having both the Carling Cup and FA Cup we’ll be hard pressed to fit everything in with a winter break.

Or get rid of an international break

or reduce the number of teams in the international tourneys and make them shorter. But that’s less revenue. They could also get rid of cup replays and just have penalties, but again, revenue.
