Fusillade 3: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

do NOT hurt him, Patrice

So it's Monday night and you know what that means: I'm ridiculously tired and I have a headache! In a completely unrelated matter, it also means that this week's edition of Fusillade is out. So, uh, here it is.

Obviously we talked quite a bit about the Manchester United loss, because, you know, if we didn't there wouldn't have been much to talk about. As it turns out Michael Owen didn't end up playing nearly as big a role as we had all hoped. We talked at great length about the performance of young winger and budding cult leader Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and what it might mean for some of the more experienced players in the club for the rest of the season (or at least until Gervinho comes back from the African Cup of Nations). We also have a frank discussion about the booing that accompanied the Oxlade-Chamberlain/Arshavin substitution, which is almost entirely serious, in a minor departure for us.

Two notes: First of all, Paul wasn't on because of family obligation-type stuff (not for more nefarious reasons). Secondly, I apologize about the sound quality. I don't know what was going on, I guess our Internet connections weren't as good as they usually are. I DID WHAT I COULD, OKAY?

We didn't get to any questions this week, but remember that if you have things you'd like us to answer or talk about, shoot us an email at fusilladecast(AT)gmail(DOT)com, and we will do our best to get to it. No really, I promise.

Where do you guys find statistics like tackling percentage? I need a good soccer resource, like the equivalent of FanGraphs or BBRef.

Some of their stats are meaningless, but some mean more.

No point really...

Just download the file from Podomatic, and just drag it to iTunes, it even gets recognized as a podcast right off the bat

Dummy Question

This might be a silly question, but is there a RSS feed for the podcast that I can subscribe to? I didn’t see one on the pod-o-matc site.

That will help. I’m addicted to soccer podcasts on my phone and use google reader to catch all the podcasts I’m subscribed to. I like this Arsenal specific one better than another one with nasaly and overly apologetic hosts.

Excellent conversation.

It’s nice to listen to you guys talk Arsenal at work. It actually makes me, somehow, more productive.

On the topic of making Ox a starter:

He’s good clearly, but can you make a starter out of someone who can’t play 90 minutes?

Sure you can

and then you build his fitness up to the point where he can play 90 minutes.

If you start a player who you know can't last, that means you have to plan ahead that you MUST use a substitution on him

Which is not a desirable situation. Wouldn’t you want to continue playing him as a sub and give him more games before you make him a starter?

It's kind of a catch 22 at that point

if you only ever play him as a sub, would he ever get to the fitness level needed to stretch out for 90? I don’t know the answer, but it seems like it’d be easier to play someone 70 min a week for a few games then push him to 90 than it would be to play him for 20/week then get to 90.

by pdb on Jan 25, 2012 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

A fair point

And I’d like to see him over Arshavin anyway… I just worry about the tactical disadvantage it causes. Since we know we’ll have to sub Ox out every game for the next x games, we’ll constantly be playing with effectively only 2 tactical substitutions until Gervinho comes back.

Anyone else see this?

Kroenke could make a bid for the Dodgers.

I sure hope that doesn’t happen. I don’t want Arsenal connected to the Dodgers in any way.
