Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Gunners close to signing Thomas Eisfeld, Borussia Dortmund U-19 midfielder
Arsenal appear set to sign Borussia Dortmund midfield prospect Thomas Eisfeld to a contract in the next day, according to reports in German sport newspaper Revier Sport and the Daily Mail. Although it is not yet official, Jamie Sanderson tweeted about the possible signing earlier this morning:
Follow us after the jump for more...
Goal.com's German wing had this to say:
Wie ein Mitarbeiter der Agentur International Soccer Management gegenüber der Revier Sport mitteilte, befindet sich Eisfeld-Berater Reza Fazeli derzeit für Verhandlungen in London. Ebenso ist Eisfeld selbst zum Medizincheck in der britischen Hauptstadt. Wie hoch die Ablösesumme ist bleibt zunächst ungewiss, dürfte aber nicht allzu hoch ausfallen, da Eisfelds Vertrag diesen Sommer ausläuft.
Run through Google Translate, that comes out as:
As an employee of the International Soccer Management Agency to the Reviersport told there is ice rink consultant Reza Fazeli currently in negotiations for London. Likewise, even the ice rink medical check in the British capital. How much is the transfer fee is initially remains uncertain, but it should not be overly high, since ice rink contract expires this summer.
Huh! Apparently, "Eisfeld" is German for "ice rink".
Adjusted:
As an employee of the International Soccer Management Agency [told] Reviersport, [Eisfeld's agent] Reza Fazeli is currently in negotiations for London. [Eisfeld is in London for a medical, as well]. How much...the transfer fee is initially remains uncertain, but it should not be overly high, since [Eisfeld's] contract expires this summer.
At the Daily Mail, they have reported that "Eisfeld is out of contract in the summer and Arsenal will have to pay compensation of around £420,000."
While it's not exactly Eden Hazard, and maybe doesn't help Arsenal right this instant, it's still a potentially exciting youth signing, and we all know what Borussia Dortmund is about these days, so that's cool.
Hey, it's a (possible) signing! CATCH THE FREAKIN' FEVER, PEOPLE.

Eisfeld’s contract expires in June so #AFC paying a nominal fee. Lengthy medical first, as he has had cruciate problems before.

The risk of reinjury and his recovery will have to be assessed but it isn't impossible to recover from one. Just takes about a year after rehab to get back to 100%.
Frimpong has been doing quite well despite a nasty tear there last year. He should be a cheap signing for the future anyway. Nothing too risky even if he doesn’t work out.

I can understand how Arsene got confused. Both 19 years old. Both midfielders. Both German.
This team will be the death of me.
I bet we're gonna pull a switch-a-roo on them!
we sign this guy, but Gotze comes over and changes his name to ice rink and no one’s the wiser!

Bishoff, Watt, Murphy, Hoyte, etc…
Yea what about them?
I’m not saying Arsenal shouldn’t sign youngsters. I’m saying it doesn’t register with me until they start playing for the 1st team.
THey're not all gonna make it.
THat goes for all teams with their youth. Even when teams sign grown up established players it doesn’t work.
by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 30, 2012 5:40 PM EST up reply actions
Absolutely. But I atleast have an idea who they are, how they play, and if I think they will ever be successful for Arsenal.
example: Silvestre=-ugh. Arshavin-YES!
I think we can trust the club to sign a player they know about
I’m sure they didn’t just hear of this kid like we have and have some idea of how he plays.
by Sabrina Dessipe on Jan 30, 2012 6:46 PM EST up reply actions
My point is simply this.
It is an unproven youngster that we have no idea about. We have seen many become good and many become busts, and without watching him play we have no idea how this one will turn out.
Could be another Ox/Fabregas signing or could be a Bishoff/Wellington type. Until we (I) know more, I struggle to really build up any enthusiam for it.
Wellington was really dissapointing. I was seriously sold on him.
He’s played what 90 minutes over the last 2-3 years. What a waste of talent on a kid without work ethic. Still can’t help but think he would have become something if we could have gotten him a work permit and had him train with us instead of loaning him off to some club with little interest in him.
I wouldn't say he's a waste
He just turned 19. Ok, maybe his work ethic needs help, but that could get better.
We tried to get a work permit, but couldn’t.

Cost us a heck of a lot less than any established player and the majority were expected to fail anyway. Individually we expected good things out of all of them but evaluating them as a group it was inevitable most would not come good enough to play for the club.
The combined cost of those players was easily less than say Squilacci who gave us nothing but an extra body in terms of performance.
My only point is that atleast I knew that Squilaci was an experienced Frenchman that lacked pace when he was originally signed.
This kid? Couldn’t tell you if he was right or left footed before today. Heck, can’t even find him on wikipedia. Until I know more…. meh.
So he's guilty until proven innocent?
You said it right, you don’t know what he is. He may not be a hit, but he may also not be a failure.
That’s the nature of signing development players. It’s a worthy policy though.

Would you rather sign him in 5 years when he's worth 10 million more?
Even if he doesn’t pan out, we will be able to sell him for some sort of a profit. His wages are probably still nominal. And there is still the significant chance that he will become a starter-calibr player

Why are we signing an Ice field? Surely that goes against the tradition of the club. We’re not Stoke. The immaculate pitch is a large part of what makes Emirates an Arsenal Stadium.
Well that didn't mislead me at all.

So QPR is wheeling and dealing for Cisse (Lazio) now
I only watched him in one game, making for a terribly insufficient sample size, but he had pace, strong on the ball, and bullish in the air (and he can do backflips after scoring a goal). Could’ve been a good backup for RvP.
Because Cisse sucks
He’s had 48 shots, and scored from 1, or a 2% goals/shot percentage.
For comparison, van Persie has a 19% goals/shot percentage, Gervinho 12%, Walcott 5.8%, Ramsey 2.5% and Chamakh 2% (bear in mind he’s had 5 shots, so sss). Oh, and everyone’s favourite player to hate, Arshavin, 3.8%.
So Cisse is worse than every single attacking player at Arsenal. He would add absolutely nothing considering the wages he’s on.

Yeah agreed.
He had a good season or two for Pool and Marseille but he was never brilliant. Park/Chamakh/Henry are all on the same level and we don’t need another good but not great player.
I guess the one game didn't give me a good perspective
but is goals/shot percentage the best indicator of future performance? I know that statistics isn’t as advanced in football as say baseball, but I’m wondering if there are better indicators. You’re right about him having terrible form though.
Not at all. This is a tough sport to analyze with stats alone.
We know he took those shots, but what if they were all from insane angles or from 25+ yards out?
But, with 48 shots
And only 1 goal, I think we can say for certain that Cisse isn’t very good.

one is a winger and one is a central midfield….I’m not really seeing the comparison tbh.
by LouisMurphy'sLaw on Jan 30, 2012 7:40 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah different players. Ox could play central midfield if we really wanted him too but Ryo is a traditional winger bags of pace and he loves to take people on down the flanks.
I figure neither will get playing time and he had a cross that led to a goal in a game for Feyenoord
I don’t mean to compare them positionally, but they are both young, coming into the squad, unlikely to pick up too many minutes, and look talented. And they both look to have an ability to pick out strikers for assists.
Ryo's going on loan, it seems
To Bolton or Fulham. So there’s that.

Good for him
He did pretty well in Holland, some EPL time will work him in just like Jack and Aaron before him… Unfortunately I can’t really say the same for Vela

I heard that. It probably is best, but I'd rather see him here
He looked good from what I saw in his playing time in Feyenoord. Like, EPL sub v Minnows good.
He's got ahead of him
1. Gervinho
2. AOC
3. Henry
4. Arshavin
5. Yossi
There’s no way Ryo gets enough minutes.

By the way, you left out Walcott and Rosicky.
Gervinho is not here
Henry is leaving/injury prone
Ox is young and gets tired
Arshavin is a serious emergency
Yossi could sub in for Walcott or a CM
I mean Ryo could get a few minutes in as a sub. No, I don’t think he should be a starter, but coming in when the game is going smoothly (I am really hoping that actually happens again) and just getting in some EPL action.
by Adnan Ilyas on Jan 30, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions
None of your options work out...
This is the last chance to get him out on a loan. Gervinho will be back in a week and a half, Ox could end up playing whole games soon, Arshavin still gets picked over Ryo regardless of form, and Yossi is ahead of Ryo regardless of who he subs in for, plus there’s Rosicky and Walcott.
If Ryo stays, he sees zero time. If Ryo goes, he gets quality playing time at a Wigan or a Bolton, either as a sub or possibly a starter. Which do you think is going to be more beneficial for the development of a 19 year old?
UMD Bulldogs: 2011 NCAA DI Men's Hockey Nat'l Champions; 2008 & 2010 NCAA DII Football Nat'l Champions
I agree that at this point, it would be best if he went on loan
that said, i’m not really talking about player depth right now. I really mean that I wish Wenger had/will play(ed) him while the game was secure, just to see minutes. Not because there is nobody ahead of him. Just to get a bit of a feel of what the league is like
Hopefully it's not a fake video

We constantly criticize how Arsenal’s transfer system works, and I’ll admit that we should start signing a bit more players that can play first team right away, but this is still a very good prospect. I don’t think we’ll see him play any first team ball in the EPL or CL this season (but considering that the whole team is made of china, who knows…), and he’ll probably be a benchwarmer for the FA Cup, but come next year we may see him feature more. This is how we work, and this is how come we have Ramsey, the Ox, and Walcott, through this same method.
I did feel a little duped though, I was like “oh shit we got Gotze!” but yea, then I realized that the odds of us actually spending more than 15 mil. on a player are probably pretty slim.
He’s already got his nickname though, the Ice Rink…
UMD Bulldogs: 2011 NCAA DI Men's Hockey Nat'l Champions; 2008 & 2010 NCAA DII Football Nat'l Champions
I have one problem with this
If this kid is such a talent, how is it that he couldn’t get any playing time at BvB? Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund (my personal pick to replace Wenger whenever his time is up) is famous for loving to play young talent yet they were willing to let Eisfeld go? If you can’t cut it there you can’t cut it at Arsenal.
I believe Arsenal is bit more prestigious than Dortmund, but don’t hold me to that. Also, the EPL is a bit more prestigious then the Bundesliga. And Arsenal pay their youth better than most teams.
by Adnan Ilyas on Jan 30, 2012 10:35 PM EST up reply actions
They've already got a ton of young talent in their starting eleven and bench
How’s a development player going to break in? It’s not like Dortmund are shopping him, his contract expired.
SBN Bloglist:
The Short Fuse (Arsenal, EPL)

His contract was running out.
Dortmund have a great midfield with Gotze/Kehl/Bender/Kagawa and Gotze is obviously outshining him at the minute so he probably wanted to move to get more time.
He might have been our only real signing in January but it isn’t like we signed him to come in and play right away. He’s just another developmental player. We sign tons of them every year for <1 million, some pan out some don’t. At the worst he’ll provide some depth.
