Not Strictly Soccer Related: Holiday Pop Culture

It's now post-Thanksgiving, which means inevitably everything turns full-on into Christmas as far as advertising, TV, movies, and music goes. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - I'd rather wait until December to fully dive into such things, but as long as it mostly holds off till after Thanksgiving I'm good with it. It's when you go to Lowe's in September and see Christmas stuff that my hackles get raised. I can't even imagine what it's like for someone who doesn't celebrate Christmas.

But anyway, here we are at the start of the Christmas season, which does mean busting out the Christmas media. I do love a lot of holiday-related things in TV, movies and music, so today's question is pretty straightforward: What are some of your favorite Christmas media or pop-culture things?

Here's a few of mine:

  • Movies:
Elf, A Christmas Story, and Scrooged. It's not a complete holiday season without watching these three movies - I didn't want to like Elf, because for the most part Zooey Deschanel makes me want to burn things (although she is good on New Girl), but Elf is a really charming movie. Scrooged has remained a favorite pretty much since it came out - it's Bill Murray at his best, I think.
  • Music:
This list starts and ends with the greatest Christmas album ever made - A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector. Not only does it contain the best Christmas song ever, but from top to bottom it's a fantastic slab of Christmas Wall of Sound that I can listen to over and over and never get tired of. It seems like almost every musical affinity puts out a Christmas album, too - there's metal ones, rockabilly ones, punk ones, and one of my other favorites, A Very Special Christmas Vol. 1, which includes probably my second-favorite Christmas song ever.
  • Comedy:
Patton Oswalt's dissection of the execrable "Christmas Shoes" is absolute genius, both the bit itself and the animation in the video. I also have a soft spot for Bob and Doug McKenzie's Twelve Days of Christmas, mostly because I really miss SCTV.
  • TV:
I must admit, apart from the obvious - your Charlie Browns, your Frosty The Snowmans, your Rudolphs, your The Year Without A Santa Clauses - I'm not too up on Christmas TV; pretty much every show ever does a Christmas episode, but I don't really have a favorite one of those, at least not one that leaps immediately to mind.

So that's my list. What's yours? And if you don't want to talk about/don't care about Christmas stuff, how about talking about crazypants Sepp Blatter, who now is talking about folding the Europa League into a 64-team Champions League? Because if people like the Champions League with 32 teams, they'll like it just as much with 64, right? Ugh. Sepp needs to leave the game alone for a while.
