Per Mertesacker Has Suffered Ankle Ligament Damage, according to Arsène Wenger
Despite Arsenal's come from behind victory today against Sunderland, there was a negative, with Per Mertesacker being taken off by a stretcher off after apparently hurting himself on Sunderland's tractor field pitch. Initial reports from Arsenal's Twitter feed mentioned in passing a calf injury, but according to Iain Macintosh, who was at the Stadium of Light and at the post match press conference, Mertesacker has suffered an injury to his ankle ligaments.
UPDATE: Arsène Wenger has confirmed the injury in his press conference:
It was unfortunate. Mertesacker told me that he got a shot in his ankle and couldn't move at all anymore. We are a bit worried about his ankle I must say because he goes home on crutches. He has done some ligament damage, but how big that is we will have to check tomorrow. For sure he is out for Wednesday.
No timeframe has been given for Mertesacker's return, but he obviously won't be able to play against AC Milan. For the mean time, either Francis Coquelin or Kieran Gibbs will play left back and Thomas Vermaelen can play in the middle, and Johan Djourou is back from injury. Another option could be to recall Kyle Bartley, but hopefully Mertesacker just stretched his ligaments.

Fuck.
Why can’t we ever just have a good day, top to bottom? Other than Blackburn, I guess.

Well,
Chelsea lost, Liverpool lost, Newcastle lost (losing). We’re in fourth on GD. I’ll take this any day and worry about the details later.
This is what Ice Cube was talking about. I gotta say it’s been a great day.

Not really
he has been quite poor in the air IMHO

Yeah he hasn't really shown that much ability to attack the ball off a set piece
But his height is still handy on defense.

I respectfully disagree
There have been many times I’ve seen him head out balls from our box. I think we’ve done better on set pieces this year as well…
well, on the bright side
Ligament damage on the foot is usually not very bad. A few weeks rest should help. It could have been a tendon/muscle/bone issue

Yeah
I saw him go down and thought it was the knee.
Could easily have been out for season
Good news if it’s only a few weeks.
* and that would have been worse

Hope the big man is OK
Speaking of Bartley, how is he doing with Rangers? Is he playing regularly?

Sagna-Vermaelen-Koscielny-Gibbs
is the preferred back 4, right? Sure, we don’t have much margin for error, but usually an injury to you’re back-up central defender is not supposed to be a dealbreaker.
Captain, there are doubt''s...
No, but while he's been a tad inconsistent he's been pretty good for us
and I would much rather be able to rotate in defense a bit, especially considering the propensity for both Gibbs and Vermaelen to get hurt. It’s not a massive blow, but this certainly doesn’t help.

Vermaelen-Kos is actually not the preferred CB lineup
As we saw last season, their tendency to both like to attack the ball can lead to moments of catastrophe that ruin 89 minutes of good defense. Vermaelen OR Kos paired with Djourou was awesome, and I would prefer Verm/Mertesacker this season.

hmmmm interesting. I do see your point and acknowledge some truth. Attacking the ball is what we know and love in Vermaelen so thats fine, but since last year Koscielny has been improving by leaps and bounds so hopefully he is more in tune to reading play now. Him and Verminator are definitely our two best centrebacks so we should hope that they are able to work out together.
This team will be the death of me.
Vermaelen-Koscielny
Has been a partnership for about 5 games.
This season, Verm-Kos was a cleansheet against Newcastle and WBA, held Liverpool scoreless for 15 mins before Kos went off and kept a cleansheet against Udinese scoreless in the first leg.
Last year, they were together twice.

Am I remembering something wrong?
I distinctly remember a serious problem when Vermaelen played together with another cb who liked to attack the ball. Was it Gallas I’m talking about then, then season before? It must be.

Possibly

Actually it was a problem when he attacked with someone who was too passive or lacked the pace/positional sense to cover for him.
Know that whole sweeper/stopper system 5 year olds and ancient teams run/ran? It was basically like that. We had one CB trying to run around and stop the ball but no one good at sweeping up the stuff he let past. That was more of a Squielny problem though. Dual attacking actually works quite well as long as the team as a whole is committed to it.
Hopefully this doesn't affect his t-rex dancing long-term

Figures. Get well soon.
Hopefully not as serious as it sounds. As someone who had an ankle tear they freaking suck.
He's been playing mighty well too.
From when he first came on to now, he seems to have found his way. This does hurt.

its probably better that he misses milan (assuming gibbs is fit.)

Gervinho loses the ACN for IC
he’ll come back in poor form
Chuck Norris doesn't need a bat.
he just roundhouse kicks the ball out of the park.
He got a PK that should have won the game
Except Drogba missed it.
I blame Drogba

that penalty shootout was unbelievable.
that is what sports is all about. Seeing what it meant to Zambia made me choke up a little.
I was just hoping Gervinho made his for arsenal reasons and of course he didnt because we’re arsenal… sigh.
This team will be the death of me.
It's unbelievable how much confidence he's lost in front of goal
It almost seems like he’s afraid to shoot now
we should probably just TRAID

Is wilshere done for the season?
Officially or unofficialy?
by spazerson on Feb 13, 2012 8:21 AM EST via mobile reply actions
Arsenal says he isn't done for the season
however, as far as I know, we don’t know when he will be back. So that could be after the season ends
I remember saying something along the lines of reevaluating him sometime semi soon.
Like either after Milan or Spurs or something

So, I watched the replay last night.
Jesus, I feel like that was all Sunderland’s fault. At a minimum, teams should be required to provide a pitch that doesn’t give way when you run on it.
Stadium Of Shit.
Captain, there are doubt''s...
I watched it too
It was so much worse than Sporting KC’s pitch in the middle of last year. I mean you could expect a funny bounce or two but no one ever got seriously injured on it.
