Arshavin, Park And Benayoun Impress, As Do Youngsters In Reserve Victory

Park 6'
Arshavin 44'
Afobe 58'
Arshavin 65'
Benayoun 87'

Andrei Arshavin and Yossi Benayoun were the standout performers as Arsenal's second string crushed their Norwich counterparts. Neil Banfield named 8 players with some first team experience, with only Jernande Meade, Martin Angha and James Shea having never played for Arsenal.

Lineup:

1-Shea; 2-Jenkinson, 5-Angha, 6-Miquel (c), 3-Meade; 4-Yennaris, 8-Ozyakup; 7-Benayoun, 11-Arshavin, 9-Chamakh, 10-Park

Star-divide

Arsenal lined up in a lose 4-4-2/4-2-3-1, with Park, Arshavin and Benayoun all having free attacking roles, with Neil Banfield evidently being the Arsenal Reserves equivalent of Harry Redknapp, without the tax evasion charges links to the England job. Nico Yennaris, known at first team level for being a right back, played in a double pivot with Oguzhan Ozyakup, a deep-lying playmaker.

After just 5 minutes, Arsenal had their first sight of goal. Nico Yennaris played a wonderful long ball over the top of Norwich's defence for Arshavin to run onto. With the Norwich keeper, David Wooton, rushing out, the Russian tried to chip, but it just sailed over the bar. A minute later, though, Arsenal were ahead. The Norwich #10, Matt Ball, gave the ball away to Arshavin in the middle, who passed to Ozyakup coming through the middle, who then passed to Benayoun running down the left. Benayoun twisted past two, before firing off the near post. The shot rebounded to Park, who had no problems smashing his shot home.

A through ball saw James Shea rush out, but his clearance wasn't very good, and fell to Matt Ball, who attempted a shot from 35 yards. Reserves captain Ignasi Miquel, though, was back in the penalty area, and easily chested the shot down before clearing.

After 30 minutes, Marouane Chamakh came off after aggravating a toe injury, resulting in Benik Afobe making his return to competitive football. Afobe was soon involved, but first Ozyakup would shoot from range, with Wooton parrying the shot to Park, who's shot was deflected over the crossbar. It was another warning shot from the impressive Ozyakup, who was involved moments later, with his pass setting up Yennaris to play a Cesc-ual throughball for Arshavin, who held off the defender and was then felled as he rounded Wooton, to give Arsenal a penalty. Wooton was lucky to stay on, but then made a tremendous save from Afobe's penalty, stretching all the way to his left to push the shot around the post. It was unlucky from Afobe; most penalties struck that well and in that area aren't saved. Afobe would get revenge on the stroke of half time; collecting a wonderful Ignasi Miquel diagonal on the right hand side, he checked the ball back for Arshavin, who's supposed cross ended up dipping past Wooton and in off the far post to give Arsenal a well-deserved two goal lead. Lucky, perhaps, but a typical Arshavin goal.

At half time the impressive Yennaris went to right back as Carl Jenkinson was replaced by Kyle Ebicillio, who took up Yennaris' role. Ozyakup played a one-two with Arshavin, before slipping in Benayoun, who made a diagonal run from the left, but, having gone past the keeper, took the ball too far, and his shot was cleared off the line. Benayoun, though, would be involved for Arsenal's third goal; Theo Jones played a blind ball into the middle, which Afobe intercepted and headed to Benayoun, who returned a brilliant through ball for Afobe to calmly slot past Wooton.

Diagonal's were a feature of Arsenal's play, and Park played a great one from the right touchline in the midfield for Benayoun, who went past Jones to the byline, before shooting against Wooton. The rebound, however, fell to Arshavin at the edge of the area, who slotted into the right corner of the goal in Thierry Henry fashion to make it 4-0.

Norwich almost got a consolation goal when Josh Dawkin jinked his way past Angha, Miquel and Meade, but his shot went wide of James Shea's post.

The very impressive Ozyakup was again involved for Arsenal's 5th goal. He played a one two with Zak Ansah, who dropped deep, allowing Benayoun to make a diagonal run. The Israeli was found by Ozyakup's perfect through ball, and he duly chipped his shot over a diving Wooton, completing a very impressive reserves performance.

Afterwords, Banfield praised the senior players for their professionalism; hopefully, Arsene Wenger will have noticed and will consider playing one of Arshavin, Benayoun or even (whisper it) Park. For the younger players, both Ozyakup and Yennaris were very impressive, as was Afobe, who's finishing was very calm and accurate. Miquel and Angha were solid in the defence, and were heavily involved in Arsenal's build up play.

Benayoun

With Arteta and Ramsey playing so many damn minutes why has Benayoun not featured more? It seems like he’d be a more than competent replacement to give Ramsey and others some rest.

Well, Benayoun's not really a central midfielder

He’s more of a #10/second striker or playmaker in the wide areas. I’d certainly like to see him more though

Who can play CM then? You have Rosicky but other than that who?

Hah, well

Does someone need to send Arsene a copy of the book Roster Construction for Dummies? I mean, theoretically you could switch to a 4-4-2 with Song and Arteta in the MF with a combo of Arshavin/Youssi/Ox/Walcott/Gervinho on the wings with RVP and Chamak/Park/whomever as a second striker. But the lack of CM has killed this thing this year.

by jf55510 on Feb 22, 2012 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

That'll be good,

but I guess just Wenger is not very confident in switching the formation at this point.
RVP has gotten accustomed to play as a lone striker and it could have take him a while to adapt playing alongside another striker. Van Persie started as a winger but it’s been a while since he has been playing all by himself. The 4-4-2 could work very well as could it also be counterproductive.

Definitely

Wenger has other things in mind like keeping his job for instance, rather than roster reconstruction at this point.

Definately

But the CM is, among the other weakspots, the really major weakspot hampering this thing now.

I don't...

get why Wenger doesn’t plays Benayoun in the upcoming matches, he is very creative player and has still has some years ahead of himself. Perhaps because of indiscipline?. He was an important player for Liverpool not too long ago. I remember the 08-09 season Benayoun shined with Liverpool when they trashed Madrid and Yossi scored at the Bernabeu. They also tied againts Chelsea in a stunning 4-4 draw, and latter in the EPL they trashed Man. United at Old Trafford, Liverpool was better than United that season. They deserved to win the Premiership that year but unfortunately they tied in too many matches. Anyways. My point is that Benayoun can be an important player for us, if he is fit why not letting him play?, and considering he is on loan from Chelsea, why not just letting him play until the end of the season?, after all we got nothing to lose.

Why Park?

He is an striker, and Van Persie is on top form, probably the best in his whole career. Robin can be a menace to any defense just by himself. Aidan his right, he just needs the right pass for his left foot and he’ll keep on scoring. Benayoun or even Arshavin could provide the spark the midfield needs.

Because it's good to have options, and because Park is theoretically a good player

van Persie is indeed in top form, but it would be good to have another route to the back of the net. It’s dangerous to rely on one striker for all your goals.

I think a lot of the deal with Park, though, is just that nobody’s seen him play ever, so he hasn’t really had a chance to make an impression one way or the other.

by pdb on Feb 22, 2012 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

He could also play on the wings

And he is really really really fast. Plus, we all know that Robin has glass ankles.

I don't think it's so much that he forgot

He’s just making up for everyone else’s inability to stay healthy. Come to think of it, has RVP been injured at all this season? And has anyone else been that, well, healthy?

by Adnan Ilyas on Feb 22, 2012 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

RVP

has been suffered from injuries his whole career, it’s not a secret. Seems this season is the exception. That’s why we better enjoy him while we can. He also needs some rest because of so many watches, that’s not a secret either. Wenger should RVP play against Spurs, then start rotating.

I don't wanna be fussy but

seems you guys want Park to play at the expense of RVP out with a possible injury. Yes he is injury prone but I hope he stays healthy for the rest of the season, he deserves to be injury free for once. I know Park deserves a shot but he hasn’t play a competitive match in a long time. Reserve games aren’t necessarily competitive for first team players, of course it helps players who are relegated to bench to stay fit, but the exigency it’s not the same. Getting back to Park, currently it isn’t time for him to play a 90 minutes match, Wenger should slowly integrate to the first team again, 10, 15, 20 minutes should do it for now, I’m sure Wenger is gonna give him time as the season progresses in due time. No need to expect RVP out because he has a history with injuries, we should all expect him to be healthy until the season ends.

That's not at all what we're saying

we should all expect him to be healthy until the season ends

Health and injuries are not something you can predict or plan for. You can’t guarantee RvP will be healthy – I certainly don’t want RvP to get hurt, and I hope his injury-prone days are gone for now, but there has to be a viable second option behind him just in case, given his history.

I want to see Park play because I want to see what he’s capable of – if he’s good, why not pull RvP out of a match with 20 minutes to go or something along those lines? There’s no need to do a direct swap and rest RvP entirely – as you say, Park’s fitness probably isn’t up to a 90 minute match at this point. But if Arsenal are up a couple goals in the 65th or 70th minute, what’s the harm in bringing him on for RvP?

It’s not either/or – I want to see them both. RvP is the better player, but let’s see what Park can do as a sub.

by pdb on Feb 22, 2012 11:35 PM EST up reply actions

Park,

is gonna get chances to show his worth. Wenger is gonna rotate RVP any time soon. If i’m not mistaken RVP has played most matches during the season, therefore Wenger is gonna have to rest him eventually, and that’s were Park chance is coming in. Chamakh, and even Afobe deserve a chance too in my humble opinion.

Regarding health issues and possible injuries, I’m aware of that, don’t worry. Any player can get injured no matter how strong or healthy he is, but like I said before, I have faith in RVP finally overcoming injuries, at least for this season, and we should all wish him well for the rest of the season despite his injury record.

For me it’s always delightful to see RVP, it’s like going to the Louvre Museum or even better, like he said: “football is where my creativity comes out”. He is an artist on the pitch, and it’s great to have him at Arsenal. Hence my wish for him of staying healthy from now on even if it looks imposible. If there’s a player that resembles Cruyff that’s RVP and Messi, I never saw Cruyff and that’s why I like to watch RVP. I like watching Messi too but since I’m not a Barcelona supporter I prefer RVP over him.

I really don't think that Wenger will rotate RvP

1) Wenger clearly hates having to rotate
2) Wenger clearly lacks confidence in the other strikers
3) RvP is the captain
4) we are a one man team

RvP is my favorite player. He is a huge reason why I started following Arsenal. But let’s face. He has glass ankles. We have to be careful. And right now, he’s carrying the team. Whether we like it or not, we are a one-man team. If RvP gets shut down, we get shut down.
Now, I want to see Park play. The guy has to go for military service in a few short years. His time is limited. His time is limited and he has seen a grand total of 7 minutes of EPL action. This is a national team captain. This is the captain of a national team that has done well for the past 3 world cups. When he has played for us, he’s done well. So I don’t understand why we don’t play him
Tactically, he could be quite useful. In the second half, if we haven’t been playing well, Wenger could pull off Walcott and play Park as a second striker. Where RvP is being isolated, the speedy Park might be able to confuse the back line enough for an opening to pop up, as Henry did vs Sunderland.

by Adnan Ilyas on Feb 23, 2012 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

One way to make sure RvP doesn't get injured

Is to not, y’know, run him into the ground.
6-1 up against Blackburn with 30 minutes left. Why not bring on Park?
Why does van Persie start against Sunderland last weekend? He got nothing out of them the previous week, he looked tired.
Why is Park not even on the bench? Park’s actually looked good when he played for the first team, unlike Chamakh.

He is gonna have to rotate eventually and give RVP a rest. He can’t keep lining up RVP in all matches. Remember RVP plays the EURO on summer and it wouldn’t be good for his health to arrive physically exhausted for the tournament. I’m sure the club doctors are gonna keep remaining Wenger of that. If he doesn’t do it then I don’t know. He knows he has to.

Once a Gunner, always a Gunner

by javi92 on Feb 23, 2012 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

Park is a indeed a good player but,

like I said before RVP is just been outstanding, if he was in bad shape then Park should get a chance but since he is not then he should keep playing. But at this point rotation would be good. RVP is not only the one who scores pretty much all the goals, but he also earns the victories and steps up for the team. It’s not a secret that currently Arsenal is RVP and 10 more. Wenger should fixed the Van Persie dependency, I said it before, it’s not good for a team to just rely on a player, it’s great for RVP, I’m very happy for him, but someone else besides him needs to step up, in fact, the whole team needs to step up.

Thanks. And I’m not suggesting Park has to start Sunday, just more to your point of Arsenal’s (over)dependence on RvP; there’s a built in solution to that sitting right there that Arsene, for whatever reason, doesn’t feel the need to use.

by pdb on Feb 22, 2012 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

Right, the RVP dependency

I wasn’t exactly referring about another striker scoring goals. I was rather referring about the whole team. They all need to step up too. Arteta, Ramsey, (for instance, he has a poor scoring record for an AM, even though he is not exactly one but rather a box-to-box midfielder, but I don’t blame him for because he doesn’t have someone to support him), Ox, Walcott, Vermaelen, it’s been a while since hasn’t score, I was accustomed to see him score a goal once in while, he is also deadly in set pieces. We’re speaking about very good players, world class if you may, they all need to contribute more offensively although that’s not their primary function. Van Persie can’t do it on his own.
