The Premier League announced today a new British rights deal, worth £1 billion a year, that will take effect in the 2013-14 season. ONE BILLION DOLLARS. That's insane, and that's just for domestic rights - when the next round of global broadcast rights comes up for bid, you can bet the swimming pool full of money will expand even further.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I don't like it, but it's a thing that isn't going to change, so whatever. And the Premier League has the advantage of not being like North American sports, where for a while the answer to rapidly increasing revenues was to add more product; there is not going to be a 24-team Premier League any time soon, so at the very least they will avoid the NHL model of over-expansion that almost cost them their league (and cost them an entire season).

My only complaint about the Premier League's new deal is also voiced by Richard Scudamore, Premier League chief executive:

Scudamore pleaded with clubs not to simply use the new deal to rack up losses and fuel wage inflation. While he said he wanted clubs to still invest in the best talent, he also made a plea to invest in infrastructure and youth development.

I hope that this happens, but I'm pretty sure it won't; if you think this summer's transfer market is bananas, wait until this deal kicks in.
