According to an article in today's Guardian, 41% of American adults don't get enough exercise - "enough" being defined as:

- 30 mins of "moderate activity" five times a week
- 20 minutes of "vigorous activity" three times a week
- 600 metabolic equivalent minutes of activity a week

So today's prompt is about exercise. As mentioned before in this space, I ride my bike a lot. 30 miles Monday, hopefully 50 today, and 75 Saturday, in preparation for one of the two (and hopefully three, if my knee can take the punishment) centuries I'm planning to ride this summer. I used to be a fair-weather rider - I'd only ride in the summer, when the weather was nice, and I'd stow my bike once the rains came.

But as I got older, I realized that by living in the Northwest, being a fair weather rider meant my riding season was short, and made even shorter by the fact that I had to spend the first month of what is usually about a 12-week stretch of summer weather getting my fat butt into riding shape. I decided to ride year-round (at least to commute/run errands - I don't do centuries in the winter) which I've been doing now for about 10 years. I definitely prefer riding in the summer, because there's nothing really fun about riding in the pouring rain, but I like always being in riding shape.

I try to get to the gym, too, but I only find myself doing that about once a week these days.

What about you? Do you exercise regularly? What do you do - are you in a sports league of some sort (school, city, whatever), do you go to the gym, do you regularly bike/hike/kayak or do some other outdoor activity? Are you faithful about your exercise, or does it happen in fits and starts? Or is your idea of "exercise" walking from the living room to the kitchen?

As with all NSSR's, anything else (within the rules) is also fair game for discussion. GO!
