I loves me some Olympics. I tend to like the Winter Olympics more than the Summer, but I still watch a fair amount of Summer Olympics coverage, which leads me to today's subject and question.
There has been a lot of gnashing of teeth and rending of garments about NBC's coverage of these games - for me, the Opening Ceremonies were the worst, because NBC skipped entire segments (they went to commercial during the punk rock section of the English music history tribute, and worse, never once made mention of the whole five-minute tribute to the 7/7 bombing victims over which they aired a Michael Phelps puff piece), and Meredith Vieira was horrible (Sample commentary: "That's JK Rowling, who is the author of the very successful Harry Potter series of books." Thanks, because nobody knew who JK Rowling was!).
The coverage of the events has been fine, but what a lot of people seem to be upset about is the way NBC is presenting them. Yes, they show almost everything live, either on an NBC network or streaming, but they also show events in prime time, and most every media outlet is reporting on events as they happen. For those of us who work and want to watch stuff after work (whether DVR'd or in the prime time show), it is tremendously challenging to avoid spoilers - I'm pretty much shut off of CNN and ESPN these days, and while I don't use Twitter or FB, I can imagine those would need to be avoided as well if the element of surprise is to be maintained.
I would love it if news sources and sites would put a link on their home page that says "FOR OLYMPIC NEWS AND RESULTS CLICK HERE" and otherwise leave them off their front pages - that way, if people want to know, they can find out, and if people want to wait, they can.
So that's my question. How do you consume the Olympics, if you do? Do you watch real-time, do you stream, do you DVR and watch later? Is it important to you to not know results, or do you not care?
What else is going on this week?
