SBNation soccer will be releasing power rankings every week based on votes from editors around the network, and this week brings us the first installment. Check them out!
There are some surprises, from my point of view--I thought West Brom would be a little bit higher after the solid start they've had--and there's good ol' Arsenal, sitting at fifth, which based on a healthy mix of form and potential, seems about right at the moment. Here's what I wrote about their start:
Perpetual "club in crisis" Arsenal have looked a little feckless against two very stout defensive teams, and the call of the crisis brigade seems to be "RvP woulda buried that!" this week. This ignores a couple of salient points, namely that 1) Arsenal didn't score in their first two matches With RvP in the XI last year, and 2) that the primary problem for Arsenal's offense so far hasn't been finishing, but rather creativity and service. Two clean sheets show that the defensive side of the Gunners is moving in a good direction, and if the attackers can learn not to run into one another soon, Arsenal should be up and running just fine. Depth at striker is a potential issue.
Arsenal's first two opponents, Sunderland and Stoke, come in at 12 and 13 respectively (which feels a bit like how many men they had behind the ball both matches, am I right? AM I RIGHT? HA HA HA HA HA H AH AH AA achh, whaddyou know from funny)
Anyway, what do you think? Do you agree with the rankings? Do you think Arsenal should be higher? Lower? Discuss!
