We all know Arsenal have a mountain to climb - unfortunately, the mountain they have to climb is Everest, they are wearing flip-flops and shorts and a t-shirt, and the only food they have is a pack of M&M's and a few PowerGel shot packets. But lo! All is not lost! Look what's been happening around the soccer world this week!
- Barcelona overturned a first leg deficit to destroy Milan 4-0 at the Nou Camp, and advance to the last eight.
- Closer to home, the Seattle Sounders signed a new deal with Satan at half time of their second leg CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal match against Tigres of Mexico, and overturned a 2-0 aggregate with three goals in the second half - the first time a US team has beaten a Mexican team in the knockout round of the CONCACAFCL. Wow that's a mouthful.
So, Arsenal, over to you. Time to make some history of your own.
My question this week is about that same topic - comebacks. What's the most amazing comeback you've ever seen, in person or on TV? "Amazing" can be good or bad; my answer to that question goes all the way back to August 5, 2001. I was at home, getting ready to go on a 100-mile bike ride, and as I was getting ready, I had the Mariners game on.
At the end of the sixth, it was 12-2 Mariners, so I figured I'd watch one more inning then call it good - it was a really nice day and I wanted to get on my bike. But in the 7th, the Indians scored three, so I wanted to see how the M's reacted in the 8th.
I stayed home that day, and watched the whole slow-motion train wreck. In a season that would make baseball history as the winningest season in modern major league history, this is the game that stands out for me.
What about you? What's the most remarkable comeback you've seen?
