Sorry for the delay on posting. I originally had this almost entirely written up on schedule, but then my computer decided that I clicked a link. Luckily, I had saved a draft, but that still left half of it to redo. And that just left me unmotivated. To will try and compensate, I will attempt to write another preview today.

Today, I'm moving on to preview England. I'm mainly doing England now because they've already released their 23 man roster. However, it might be subject to a little bit of tweaking due to injuries. Let's make this clear, I'm not a fan of England. I think they are quite over-rated and a bit bigheaded. I certainly don't hate them, but I won't pretend that I'm not biased.

So I've been working on this over the weekend and I think I've got a format that I've finally settled on, mostly to do with the knockout stages.

The group stages are going to work just like the regular season IKTS scoring

1 pt. - Correct Win/Draw prediction

2pts. - Correct Win and Margin of Victory

3 pts. Correct prediction (Win/Draw and correct score)

I'll post all group fixtures in one post, so it might end up pretty big, but it's really the only option rather than to keep posting fanposts every day. Also, I'm going to outreach out to some of the other blogs and see if anyone wants to join up. If your an active member at any other soccer blogs, feel free to advertise, the more the merrier.

The knockout stages are going to work like your usual March Madness bracket would and will be in a completely different fanpost as well. Points will be awarded in tiers depending on how your bracket works. Now, I have no idea how to post a bracket in a comment, so feel free to experiment in this thread, I probably will a couple of times or so. If you find a way to post a bracket in your own way and it's understandable, that's completely fine. Scoring for the knockouts will go as followed...

6 pts. - Quarter-Final correct prediction

12 pts. - Semi-Final correct prediction

18 pts. - Correct Champion prediction

This is where our discussion starts. Do you guys feel like the points allotment for the knockout stages is pretty good, or do more or less points need to be awarded instead? I based the scoring on the potential points one can score from all the group stage games (there's 24 group stage games in all). Also for the knockout rounds, you'll receive a bonus two points for correctly predicting the score as well. Commence Discussion!

Update: I've found it easier to simply start a comment with your quarterfinal predictions, then just use replies with the semifinals and final. That wasn't so hard after all, lol

There comes a point in every footballer’s career where they’re faced with handling the business side of the sport. This aspect of the sport is something that’s played out behind closed doors (or, lately, in the confines of the manager’s residence) and every single word from key stakeholder’s quotes gets distorted, misrepresented and, most of the time, blown out of proportion. As someone who watches from outside of the main activity, I certainly don’t envy the players who have to step away from what they love doing in order to make sure their wishes, desires and ambitions in the sport are fulfilled through a mutual commitment in the form of a contract with the club that best provides these needs and wants. After all, you’ve trained yourself the majority of your life to make sure your talent lies on the pitch, not off the pitch.

Players come, players go. I get this. We all get this. But I know there are people around that like transfer speculation and all that, so in an effort to not let the rapidly-unfolding van Persie saga (it wasn't a saga on Tuesday, dammit!) not take over every thread on the site, I'm setting up a container for it here. I'll start the thread with this story from the Guardian about how van Persie will now not sign a new deal until he hears from other prettier girls in school teams, and add to it this one about Arsenal's subsequent ban on van Persie talking to the media.

So, if you want to talk about van Persie, here's a great spot to do it. Will he stay? Will he go?

I'm shamelessly stealing an idea from one of my favorite podcasts this week. At the end of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour, the hosts go around the table and answer the question "What's making you happy this week?" So, I'm asking you the same question: What's making you happy this week?

The happiest thing that has happened to me this week was my discovery at my local grocery store that, once again, it's Anderson Valley Summer Solstice time! If you've never had this beer, go find it. NOW. It's one of the three beers (along with Rogue's Hazelnut Brown Nectar and Deschutes' Jubelale) that I firmly believe will change your opinion of beer if you have never dipped your toes into the world of good beer. Summer Solstice tastes like liquid caramel, but it's got that little malty edge so that it doesn't overpower you with sweetness. It tastes like summer, and it's amazing. Get it in bottles, though - it's available in cans, but is kinda hit-and-miss flavor-wise in the can.

So, that's what's making me happy this week. What about you?

Tottenham are our rivals, I understand that, but I want to dig a bit deeper into the rivalry.

From what I understand (being a new fan circa '05) Spurs have many reasons to hate Arsenal.

- Arsenal moved north of the river a long time ago into their territory becoming local rivals in London.

- Arsenal became a very successful and winning club, especially in the Arsene Wenger era. Spurs are not that.

- Arsenal are a big club with legendary players, a nice new stadium and worldwide recognition and fanbase. No for Spurs.

- Arsenal have dominated Spurs on the pitch (maybe not as much in the past two seasons though)

A fairly recent (April 30) Swiss Ramble article on the finances of Barcelona and Real Madrid has a sneaky Arsenal reference, using the Gunners and Man U to get some perspective on the two Spanish clubs' debt (and, late in the article, comparing the train wreck that is La Liga/Spanish economics to their other European counterparts). While the first half of the blog contains charts galore of the four clubs, the main Arsenal section consists of:

Arsenal have now eliminated the debt they built up as part of the property development in Highbury Square, reducing gross debt to £258 million as at end-May 2011. That comprises the long-term bonds that represent the "mortgage" on the Emirates Stadium (£231 million) and the debentures held by supporters (£27 million). Once cash balances of £160 million are deducted, net debt was down to only £98 million, which is a significant reduction from the £136 million last year and the £318 million peak in 2008.

Many fans ask whether it would be possible for Arsenal to pay off the outstanding debt early in order to reduce the interest charges, but chief executive Ivan Gazidis has implied that this is unlikely, arguing that not all debt is bad, "The debt that we’re left with is what I would call ‘healthy debt’ – it’s long term, low rates and very affordable for the club. "In any case, the 2010 accounts clearly stated, "Further significant falls in debt are unlikely in the foreseeable future. The stadium finance bonds have a fixed repayment profile over the next 21 years and we currently expect to make repayments of debt in accordance with that profile."

I know I've been fretting a bit about the state of the Arsenal's financial obligations [Note: This is not sarcasm.] so seeing an independent source say things are pretty good makes me feel... pretty good, I guess. Looks like we'll just have to live with the "good debt" that is our new home--and thank our lucky stars that the Glazers and their shady shenanigans didn't come a-courting in Islington...

Sadly, the end of the season is here. I have to say though, regardless of the start of the year, this was probably the most exciting season I've ever followed, as I was way too young to pay attention to English football during the early part of last decade. I'm already just wanting next August to roll around so badly, not even the Euro's coming up are going to fill in the gaping hole of not catching Arsenal week in week out, so let's start off with something typical of every sport, a way too early look into how Arsenal are going to be next year
