The 12/13 IKTS Final Report

It's all over folks, and after 38 weeks*, it's Scrupio that comes out on top this year, joining Flashpacker as a fellow champion of I Know The Score, so many congrats to him. silverace99 held out and grabbed 2nd place for the second straight season, while SteakBaller was able to pull a final week victory to jump HoodRiverDuck for 3rd place. hansdampf also capitalized on my lack of fixtures for last weekend to jump into the 5th spot. The weeks results will be under the final standings for this report, and it's been great putting this together for you guys this year, some good participation across the whole board for the most part. A Season-Ending Analysis

To begin with, I was not, unfortunately, an Arsenal fan in 2004. In fact, I'd just gotten interested in soccer following the 2002 World Cup. I had heard of them, in an off-hand, back-of-my-mind sort of way, but I didn't know who they were.

It was some years later that I found Arsenal, partially from random Champions League viewing (the Barcelona matches) and partially from randomly reading my parents' copy of Fever Pitch, the excellent autobiographical tale of a life-long love of Arsenal, written by Nick Hornsby. Required reading for any Arsenal fan, in case you're not familiar with it.

As a fairly recently christened Gooner, I'd like to offer my perspective on this past season. Bare in mind that while I have a very well-rounded appreciation of the history of Arsenal football, and have watched most of the requisite highlights of days gone by, the emotional attachment that I have to Arsenal is a recent development, and is tied to the squads of the past three or four years.

Arsenal should consider this year as nothing but a rousing success. It's been noted elsewhere, but consider:

-Arsenal finished with more points than they did last year (72-70), finished with only two goals fewer (74-72), and conceded 12 fewer goals (49-37). I really like that last stat.

-Arsenal finished only two points back from Chelsea, despite spending 30m pounds less in wages, and only five points behind (an admittedly disappointing) Manchester City squad, which spent 60m pounds more than Arsenal.

-Arsenal lost the golden boot winner of not only last season, but also this season. And still managed to score only two goals fewer than last year.

All things considered, Arsenal had a very good year. There were endless doubts in the fall. They lost to Norwich City in one of the worst performances I've ever seen by Arsenal. They had some much ballyhooed misfortunes in various cup matches. There were, however, no humiliating performances like last year's loss to Manchester United; there were no second-half breakdowns. They got Jack Wilshere back, and then lost him again. And then it didn't matter. They rattled off 27 points out of the last 30, after all seemed lost when defensive ineptitude cost them the match against that team that G. Bale used to play for. They played stout, well-disciplined football down the stretch, and proved that this team was built not around one man, but around all of its players: smilin' Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta's steadfastness, Aaron Ramsey's motor and determination, Olivier Giroud's exuberance, Theo Walcott's pace, and the solid defense of Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Kieran Gibbs, and Bacary Sagna (most of the time, anyway...particularly that one time he played CB). Nacho Monreal and Carl Jenkinson also put in good spells for Arsenal. Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky both had some great matches. Lukas Podolski had some great goals, and some very opportune ones as well; the jury is still out on him and Giroud, but I have confidence. I don't know about Gervinho. No one does, really.

Arsenal played football as well as you could possibly hope down the stretch. They now have money to spend. They should buy a good striker/center forward and maybe a deep-lying midfielder to complement Mikel Arteta in the pivot. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is only going to get better. Same with Gibbs, Ramsey, and Wilshere. This team is on the rise. I don't see any key component of this team leaving this summer. Which would be the first time since...?

That last point is crucial: No key players are leaving this summer. Look at the picture of Arsenal celebrating. I don't care what anyone says about them celebrating, what it says to me is this: These guys love this club, love their teammates, and want to stick around. They want to win trophies with Arsenal. It will happen.

Bendtner: It Just Keeps Getting Worse

BBC Sport reports that Nicklas Bendtner finished his disastrous loan spell at Juventus by breaking his wrist shortly after coming on as a late-game sub in the club's loss to Sampdoria.

Here are the cold, hard facts of life on the Bendtner Juve transfer:

The Juventus official team store, according to reports that came out in March, didn't sell a single Bendtner jersey

We Know It's A Lot Of Money. How Much Is A Lot?

As we all know, the Premier League's new TV deal kicks in next season, and with it comes a whole lot of money. We knew the generalities prior to this - the deal was worth £5.5 billion over three seasons - but now we get some inkling of the specifics of the deal: The last-place team in the Premier League next season - the team that finishes 17th and doesn't get relegated - will earn more in TV revenue (£63 million) than Manchester United did this year for winning the league (£60.8 million).

My only hope is that clubs don't merely inflate every player's wages with this money, and that some of this newly minted money ends up at the academy and youth level; I'm probably naive about that, but it seems like every time there's a bump in revenue, there's a corresponding bump in the salaries of the top players, and it could be argued those don't really need bumping at this point.

As annoying as these comparisons are, I had to do one - £5.5 billion over three years is £1.83 billion a year. Which is more than the GDP of the Faroe Islands (£1.46 billion). That, friends, is a lot of money for a game.

Is Sanogo a good choice for Arsenal ?

Wenger is known for his appeal for French youngsters, and he has rarely failed when it comes to recruit a young player from across the Channel. Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy or Abou Diaby have blossomed under the red and white outfit during the last years, while they had been bought at young age and for a keen price from France. Now that we are talking about the venue of Auxerre’ striker Yaya Sanogo, a lot of questions are allowed, especially for a player who have been injured the main part of season, but we can also be optimist about the the arrival of this player, considering the taste of Arsene Wenger for high valued young players.

First of all, let me introduce you Yaya Sanogo. Considered in France as a future great one, he played this year in French Ligue 2 with Auxerre, where he only played twelve games due to injury, but scored nine goals. Desired by many clubs in French elite like Lyon or Marseille, he presents impressive skills, notably his speed and his technique for a player of his height, as he peaks at 6”3. Such a profile is undoubtedly interesting, and potentially fit from Premier League’s fixtures. However, he will have to work on his physical ability, to strengthen his game and his body, considering he faced a lot of injuries in the recent years of his young career. Formed at Clairefontaine like his fellow countryman Abou Diaby, the parallel is inevitable between the two players: French, tall, skilful, promising and unhappily fragile. But this comparison is not an excuse or a fatality, and he will have to face Premier League exigencies, which is not an easy thing.

Will he be able to play in the Premier League, and bring something to the Gunners? This is the true question. Yes he is talented, but does he have what it takes to succeed in England? Maybe a loan to a second zone team or to an ambitious squad in lack of strikers could be a good opportunity for him to show what he is able to do. Arsene Wenger knows he could find in Sanogo the striker of the future Arsenal, and there is no risk in recruiting him, as he will pay nothing for him. So in any case, that is good news for Arsenal. One thing sure, Sanogo will have to face some expectations, but he is certainly a bet on the future, so let him develop his game peacefully, and hope for future great achievements.

It's been a lovely weather week here in Portland, which makes my daily bike commute much more pleasant; I don't have to wear long sleeves, and wearing shorts doesn't make me feel like a frozen side of beef when I get to work in the morning. But with the smooth always comes the crunchy; yesterday, on my ride home, I rode through my first cloud of little gnats and ate my first bug snack of the spring/summer riding season.

It's one of those gross, unavoidable things that happen when you ride; it's usually just a gnat or two, but one time I did end up horking down a bee, which was no fun whatsoever. It didn't sting its way down, or anything - it was just unpleasant, one of those slow-mo things you see coming and can't avoid and still know it's going to be no fun. It doesn't happen often, maybe once or twice a year, but after I rode through the gnat cloud yesterday I thought "yep, it's spring now!".

What about you? Is there anything that you can point to, any event or situation that happens where you say "yep, it's spring/summer"? Hopefully if so it's not as gross as swallowing a bug.

The short story here is we all need to pull for Chelsea.

Tottenham's ceiling of 71 would mean that Arsenal would only need 4 points (A win and a draw) from their final 2 games to reach 71 and clinch at least 4th.

A Chelsea win means they would have 71 points and clinch at least 4th. (Since Tottenham could then only reach 71, and Chesea have the GD kicker)

A Draw:

A draw is still a good result for Arsenal as it means they control their own destiny for 4th and would get there with 2 wins at 73 points.

Clearing Up Some Arsenal Myths

There are a lot of well repeated statements about Arsenal Football Club coming from various media members and "fan" groups. Let's take a look and see how accurate some of them are.

Arsenal don't spend any money!

- That's flat out incorrect, Arsenal have spent £145,700,000 on transfer fees alone in over the past 5 seasons.

But Arsenal sell all of their top players!

- Mr. PDB broke down Arsenal's player sales in this post. In short, most players not been better or even as good as they were at Arsenal.

But Arsenal profit on player sales!

- Yes they have. Over the past 5 seasons, Arsenal have a Net Profit on player sales of £36,700,000.

Arsenal should replace quality with quality, they shouldn't make money on players!

- Cesc is one of the 3 best midfielders in the world, and the other two were already at Barcelona. RVP is in a class with Falcao, Cavani, Zlatan, and that's it. Those others would cost close to £50m each.

But Arsenal have all this cash they are not spending!

- Arsenal have cash reserves of around £150m. There are many reasons why this is not all available to be spent. A few are that the stadium debt requires certain cash balances as terms of the financing. Cash was also kept as an assurance that the club could meet it's obligations for a number of years if Champions League football was missed.

Well why doesn't Silent Stan put some money in the club!

- Arsenal does not have a single owner like Chelsea or Man City do. Arsenal is owned by shareholders, much like any corporation you are familiar with. Stan Kroenke owns around 60% of Arsenal. Our good friend Usmanov owns about 30%. If Kroenke were to put £100m into the club who does that benefit? The club? Yes. Stan? Over time, probably. Usmanov? Yes very much so, his asset appreciates and he didn't have to do anything!

Well Arsenal need to show ambition by spending money!

- Yes because like all good teachers tell their students, ambition is how much money you spend. Liverpool have Net spending of £68,600,000 over the past 5 years, and are about to miss the CL for the 4th straight season. Ambitious. Stoke, Aston Villa, and QPR have Net spending of £80,175,000, £71,750,000, and £67,600,000 respectively. One of them is relegated and the other two still very much could be. Ambitious. Tottenham (as much as we all hate them) have really improved their squad in recent years, some might say they have been ambitious. Their net transfer spend for 5 years? Only £7,650,000 total.

Arsenal only want to make the top 4 though!

- That's the most absurd thing that I keep hearing. What does that even mean? Does the team go out and only try to win a few of the games? Are they thinking "we probably should just draw this match, because we really don't want to get to close to the title." Has anyone who has ever played any level of sports ever played a game and not tried to win?

There are huge advantages to making the CL with a top 4 finish. Just because this is a goal for the club does not mean it is the only objective.

Well Arsenal will never spend on good players so they will never be title contenders again!

- The lean years are coming to a close, with new the new Emirates deal starting this next year and a new shirt manufacturer deal coming the next season. Add that to the new Premier League TV revenue, stadium match-day revenue that is 2nd highest in the League, and Arsenal's spending power will be much higher than what it has been since the move to the Emirates. If FFP and Premier League spending controls have even a minor effect, that will only help Arsenal.

Sports clubs often deserve criticism, especially regarding management decisions. But before throwing stones, ensure that you know what you are complaining about. Arsenal's wage structure, for instance, is terrible. They pay role players far too much, which means they are impossible to sell to smaller clubs who can't afford those wages, which means those players take up money that could go to better players. Arsenal don't have a flawless transfer record, especially on the purchase side, with a number of questionable buys. At the same time though, Wenger has a history of getting good value buys.

Arsenal are in really good shape to compete next year and going forward, thanks to brilliant moves by management and ownership. They are not perfect, but no club is. (Except for Bayern, they are unstoppable.)
