Carling Cup

Arsenal 0 - 1 Manchester City: match report

Arsenal's young team played very well against a talented Manchester City operation tonight in a Carling Cup quarterfinal match, but despite being on top most of the match, succumbed to a vicious, perfect City counter following a corner, losing 1-0 at the Emirates. The Gunners can take heart from the performances of Emmanuel Frimpong, Frances Coquelin, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who were all solid-to-great in their play on the evening. Ignasi Miquel and Sebastien Squillaci played well in defense, too, despite not getting much of a first-team run this year. Arsenal simply lacked cutting edge up front, and in the end, City's quality shone through.

Arsenal v Manchester City Preview: Only One This Time

The two main attractions tomorrow. Along with booing Samir Nasri.

The Carling Cup, Quarter Final
Arsenal v Manchester City
Kickoff: 8:00 PM GMT/3:00 PM EST/12:00 PM PDT
Emirates Stadium, London Borough of Islington
TV: Fox Soccer Plus, Foxsoccer.tv (subscribers only)
Form: Arsenal WDWWWD | Manchester City: WWWWL(HAHAHAHAHAHAHA)D

The Carling Cup returns this week, as Arsenal take on Premier League leaders yet European underachievers Manchester City. With both sides are coming off of European weeks, changes sound aplenty, with Manchester City likely using the £100m of talent that they had on their bench against Liverpool. While Samir Nasri started against Liverpool, his anonymous performance that saw him hauled off after 70 minutes, coupled with a substitute role against Napoli makes it likely that he will make an unwelcome return to the Emirates. Robin van Persie, Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey are all "in the red" according to Arsene Wenger, so it's likely that they neither start nor appear on the bench.

Arsenal To Play Manchester City In Carling Cup Quarter Final

We should be seeing him against City

Arsenal have drawn Manchester City at home in the Quarter Final of the Carling Cup, to be played during the week of November 28.

It means that our kids and reserves will get a chance to test themselves against City's reserves, meaning that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will come up against the likes of Pablo Zabaletta and Kolo Toure, while Ignasi Miquel and Nico Yennaris can test themselves against £25m reserve Samir Nasri.

Arsenal 2 - 1 Bolton Wanderers: Carling Cup match report

LONDON, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 25: Park Chu-Young of Arsenal is congratulated by team mates after scoring his teams second goal of the game during the Carling Cup Fourth Round match between Arsenal and Bolton Wanderers at Emirates Stadium on October 25, 2011 in London, England. 0 - 1 Fabrice Muamba 47'
1 - 1 Andrei Arshavin 53'
2 - 1 Park Ju Young 56'

Arsenal moved on to the fifth round of the Carling Cup with a 2-1 home win over Bolton Wanderers this evening at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal couldn't find the net in the first half as they looked at a number of chances and decided that they weren't cool enough to score before Bolton started the second half with a goal by former Gunner Fabrice Muamba, combining with Darren Pratley. It would only take nine minutes for the home side to turn things around completely, though, goals from Arshavin and Park (hey, look; he does exist, and hey, look; his international form is no Lebanon-fueled illusion!) putting Arsenal in front for good.

Arsenal vs. Bolton Wanderers: Carling Cup match preview

SBN Bolton Perspective: Lion of Vienna Suite

Arsenal welcome Bolton to the Emirates tomorrow in a Carling Cup fourth round match. Having only two days between matches suggests that there will be many, many changes to the Arsenal side. Bolton will probably come in playing a fairly strong side (the aforementioned Lion of Vienna Suite thinks it might be a 4-5-1 featuring the out-of-fashion Tuncay - check out their preview for more insights), but Arsenal, two days removed from a tough Stoke match, will probably make a large number of changes.

Arsenal 3-1 Shrewsbury: Upset Avoided

LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 20: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain of Arsenal celebrates he scores their second goal during the Carling Cup Third Round match between Arsenal and Shrewsbury Town at Emirates Stadium on September 20, 2011 in London, England. (Photo by Julian Finney/Getty Images)

0-1 Collins 16
1-1 Gibbs 33
2-1 Oxlade-Chamberlain 58
3-1 Benayoun 79'

Arsenal progressed to the fourth round of the Carling Cup after a nervous but ultimately successful victory against League Two Shrewsbury. A side with a nice balance between youth and experience came back from a goal down, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Francis Coquelin the most impressive.

Wenger's team selection also caused some interest by naming Chamakh and Park together in a 4-4-2. While both of the strikers dropped deeper, this was closer to a traditional 4-4-2 than 4-2-3-1, though there was good movement with Chamberlain, Park and Chamakh.

It was Arsenal who started out impressively, with Chamakh having his header tipped over the bar by Shrews keeper Ben Smith. From the ensuing corner, Chamakh's shot was again saved by Smith. After that, though, Shrews came into the game: A set piece was missed by Djourou, but luckily no Shrews striker was sniffing around. They also hit the post, after Arsenal's high line was easily evaded when no pressure was put on the ball. They took the lead though, after a long ball after neat possession play won them a throw. From the throw-in, Lionel Ainsworth's cross was headed home by James Collins (not that one). The problem there was that Collins wasn't challenged at all; Fabianski stayed at home when the cross went into the 6 yard box, and Johan Djourou didn't jump. For a cross. He didn't jump at all. According to Wenger, he was "surprised". I guess he was unaware that balls can be headed for goals in a football match.
